Nearly 60 Flagler College students recently completed Level One tutor training through the College’s Learning Resource Center (LRC), earning International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) credentials.

Flagler’s LRC tutor training program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) through its International Tutor Training Program Certification, an internationally recognized standard for college tutor training.

At Flagler, earning Level One certification is part of an intentional process of hiring, training, and evaluating student tutors. To be recognized through the program, tutors must be recommended by a professor, earn at least a B in the course or courses they support, complete 10 hours of training, and actively participate in peer observations and semesterly evaluations.

Level One training focuses on the foundational knowledge and skills needed to be an effective tutor. Training topics include conducting a successful session, question-asking strategies, advanced study skills, and active listening and responding.

The training is designed to prepare tutors to go beyond simply knowing their subject area. Tutors learn how to create welcoming and encouraging environments where their peers can engage with course material, develop effective learning strategies, and work toward their academic goals.

The need for that support is reflected in the LRC’s reach across campus. During the 2025-26 academic year, 1,049 students visited the LRC for a combined 10,855 visits. So far this fall, the LRC has supported 562 students through 2,921 visits, totaling more than 3,200 hours spent in the center.

“CRLA is the gold standard of Learning Center Certification in the field because it is rigorous and holds high expectations of tutors,” said Lisa Van Zwoll, director of the Learning Resource Center. “We hold our tutors to high standards, and certifying the center allows us to certify all of our staff who complete the program, and they can then take this credential with them as they enter their careers.”

Van Zwoll said the program also emphasizes interpersonal skills and collaborative work, giving tutors an opportunity to develop skills that will serve them beyond their time at Flagler.

“The work our tutors do in the LRC prepares them for their futures, while allowing them to assist their peers in real time,” Van Zwoll said.

Through its tutoring program, the LRC provides academic support to Flagler students while giving peer tutors the training and experience to become knowledgeable, supportive, and effective resources for their fellow Saints.
