Two-Year Live-On Requirement at Flagler College
At Flagler College, we require all incoming students to reside on campus for their first two years. This residency requirement is designed to support students in their transition to college life and to promote a cohesive and vibrant campus community.
Benefits of the Two-Year On-Campus Residency Requirement:
- Strong Community Building: Living on campus immerses students in a dynamic environment where they can easily connect with peers, participate in student organizations, and form lasting friendships. This sense of belonging helps to create a supportive network that enhances their overall college experience.
- Convenient Access to Academic Resources: On-campus housing places students close to academic buildings, libraries, and faculty offices. This proximity facilitates frequent interactions with professors, involvement in study groups, and access to academic support services, contributing to better academic performance.
- Personal Growth and Independence: The on-campus living experience encourages students to develop crucial life skills such as time management, budgeting, and self-care within a supportive framework. This prepares them for future responsibilities, both academically and personally.
- Enhanced Campus Engagement: With easy access to campus events, extracurricular activities, and leadership opportunities, students are more likely to engage in the full range of college experiences. This involvement can lead to personal growth, professional development, and a more fulfilling college journey.
- Safety and Support: On-campus housing provides a secure environment with access to campus security and resident advisors who can offer support and guidance. This safety net is especially important for first-year students adjusting to college life away from home.
- Convenience and integration: Living on campus eliminates the logistical challenges of commuting and allows students to fully integrate into the college community. They benefit from being close to dining options, recreational facilities, and other campus amenities, contributing to a balanced and enjoyable college life.
Upper-class Students: While we strive to accommodate upper-class students in on-campus housing, availability may be limited. We encourage these students to gain experience living off-campus, which is an essential step in preparing for life after graduation. Off-campus living provides valuable lessons in managing a household, balancing responsibilities, and becoming self-reliant.
Waivers: If you are a commuter during your first year and wish to file an exception for a second year off-campus, you must request a waiver.
Exemptions to the second-year residency requirements are available for students who meet specific criteria, including:
- Students who are 21 or older
- Married students
- Students with children
- Transfer students with more than 30 credits from another institution (including dual enrollment)
- Students called into military service
- Students who can show proof of residency with a relative within 25 miles and have reliable transportation
- Other extenuating circumstances, as approved by the Division of Student Affairs
These waivers are designed to accommodate diverse student needs and situations.
