On a laptop screen, Flagler College’s campus begins to take shape one digital block at a time. Historic buildings, walkways, and gathering spaces are carefully reconstructed inside Minecraft as students collaborate to transform a familiar physical environment into a detailed, to-scale virtual world.
Students in Dr. Lisa Van Zwoll’s FlagSHIP course, Visual Storytelling, Reality TV, and Memoir, spent the JanTerm grappling with questions that sit at the core of reality media culture: where truth lives in storytelling, who shapes it, and what happens when lived experience becomes content.
As climbers around the world watched Alex Honnold scale Taipei 101 during a recent Netflix live stream, a similar sense of ambition was already taking hold much closer to home. At Flagler College, a growing group of students is finding its own vertical challenge through the Rock-Climbing Club.
When Flagler senior Maddie Nilan dives into the water, the world goes quiet. It always has. Long before she became president of Flagler College’s Deaf Awareness Club, before she transferred to Flagler in search of a campus that felt like home, and before she stepped onto an international stage wearing red, white, and blue, Nilan found her rhythm in the pool.
