Julia's History Making Moments
What are your central passion(s), and how do you plan to pursue them after graduation? How have your experiences at Flagler shaped these passions?
My central passions span across many art mediums but I am especially drawn to illustration and editorial design. I enjoy making my own illustration print goods and will continue to pursue my small art business after graduation. I also plan to pursue opportunities within the magazine design field as I love print design.
Who or what inspired your passion in this area?
My family and friends have always been a huge source of support and guidance, and I’m constantly inspired by their art and creativity. I’ve been involved in art for as long as I can remember, starting with ceramics, which really sparked my interest in creating and exploring different mediums.
My mom has also been a big inspiration to me. She’s always worked hard and has consistently encouraged me with everything I do, while fully supporting my passion for art. Both of my parents have always believed in me and pushed me to keep going, and that support has played a huge role in shaping my passion and confidence as an artist.
Can you share a memorable story from your time at Flagler that always makes you smile? What made this moment special for you?
I’ve had a lot of great memories at Flagler and met some amazing friends along the way. My sophomore year, I took Type Studio I with former Professor Joe Fioramonti. In that class, I learned so much and really grew my skills, but it’s also where I met some of my closest friends—Sammy Andress, Madeleine Glassford, Brooke Turner, and others. We ended up taking more design classes together and even going to the ADDY Gala as a group.
During both my junior and senior years, I had the opportunity to attend and receive ADDY Awards, experiences that were both exciting and rewarding. Being surrounded by classmates, friends, and professors made each event especially meaningful, and I was continually inspired by the amount of strong professional work showcased in one space. My senior year was particularly memorable, as I received the Judges Choice Award, an honor typically reserved for professionals, with my work selected as a favorite by the judges. It is an achievement and memory I will always be proud of.
Which academic resources, experiences, or mentors at Flagler were most valuable to you, and how did they contribute to your success?
The Graphic Design department at Flagler College has been one of the most valuable parts of my experience. I’ve had so many great professors—Sarah Alexander, Laura Mongiovi, and Chris Smith—who supported me throughout my time here, whether in foundation drawing classes, electives, or portfolio development.
Ron Edelen has also played a big role in my growth. As a newer addition to the program, he’s brought a lot of passion and energy into the classroom and the design department. He’s helped connect me with speakers for Design Week and has been a genuinely supportive presence at our events. He’s consistently encouraged my work and growth, which has made a real difference in my experience.
But Diana Lodi has truly been the most impactful part of my time at Flagler. As my AIGA advisor—and someone I’ve had in class and worked with as a studio assistant for the past two years—she’s been a constant source of support. From the first day of my sophomore year in Design Methods, when she encouraged me to join the AIGA board, she’s pushed me to get involved and take on leadership early. She’s encouraged me through every project and even supported my small business.
She’s created an environment where I feel trusted and empowered, allowing AIGA to be student-led while still guiding us in the best way. She also helped me get involved with the American Advertising Federation and the ADDY Awards, from volunteering to submitting work and attending the gala. I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am without her guidance through everything.
What advice or lesson would you give to your freshman year self about the college experience?
It will be hard and there will be challenging classes, long nights, and endless hours in the art studio—but it will all be worth it. You’ll meet amazing friends and mentors, make unforgettable memories, fall in love with St. Augustine, and discover opportunities within the design program that you never could have imagined.
In the Flagler spirit, how do you hope to make history after graduation?
I hope to carry forward the leadership, creativity, and community I’ve developed during my time here into a professional design role. I’m excited to continue growing as a graphic designer, whether working within a creative team or building my own business through my art.
