Carleigh's History Making Moments
What are your central passion(s), and how do you plan to pursue them after graduation? How have your experiences at Flagler shaped these passions?
After studying sport management for the last four years, I discovered my passion lies in sports marketing. After graduation, I plan to pursue this passion by gaining as much experience as possible in marketing and sales with different sports organizations and teams. Once I gain this experience, I will gradually work my way up in the sports industry to land my dream position of being a marketing manager for a NFL or college football team.
Who or what inspired your passion in this area?
After taking my first sports marketing class at Flagler, I knew this is what I wanted to pursue a career in. I enjoyed everything about the class and had fun creating my own marketing plan for one of our assignments.
Dr. Villemaire worked in this area and shared her personal experiences with our class each day. It was interesting to hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding of what it is like to work in this specific part of the sports industry. After hearing these experiences, learning about this field, and trying it on my own through our assignments, I knew sports marketing was for me.
Can you share a memorable story from your time at Flagler that always makes you smile? What made this moment special for you?
There are so many memories I have from my time at Flagler that I cannot choose just one. Every time I think back on my experience at Flagler, millions of memories flood my head and I cannot help but to smile and be thankful for everyone who made it such a memorable four years.
If I could name a couple stories, I would choose the first night after move-in at Flagler. That night I met my best friends that became my family over these last four years. I will forever cherish the bond we created and the countless memories we have from living in Ponce.
Another core memory is beating the number two seed in our conference in overtime this past season. Although this game was tough, we fought until the very last second, stayed united, and pushed one another to achieve something great. The feeling of joy and accomplishment that came from that game was unmatched. The celebration in the locker-room that day is one I will never forget and this team is one that will be in my heart forever.
Which academic resources, experiences, or mentors at Flagler were most valuable to you, and how did they contribute to your success?
The faculty mentor for my team, Dr. Howell, was so valuable to me and my success while here at Flagler. She constantly checked in to ensure I was doing well both physically and mentally. In addition, she was always open to helping whether it be academically or giving life advice.
Dr. Howell never failed to make me feel welcome and she encouraged me to do my best in school while also chasing my dreams. I am so blessed to have had Dr. Howell as my faculty mentor as the unlimited support, guidance, and wisdom she provided me allowed me to persevere through these past four years. She was an outlet to talk to about anything, and it was so nice going into her office just to catch up. She was not only a large part into my success while at Flagler, but also in my growth as a person overall.
What advice or lesson would you give to your freshman year self abou the college experience?
I would advise my freshman year self to enjoy every single second of the next four years as they go by in the blink of an eye. Take in every moment, every laugh, and every day as you will meet some of your favorite people and make some of the best memories. Also, I would advise my freshman self to not waste my time stuck in the same routine. Go out and try new things, meet new people, and take risks for this is the time to do so. This is the best way to live and grow.
In the Flagler spirit, how do you hope to make history after graduation?
I hope to make history after graduation by building a career in sports marketing where I can shape how fans connect with teams, athletes, and events. I will help to turn these moments into lasting and memorable experiences.
After graduation, I plan to pursue an entry level role or internship in the sports industry, particularly in sales and marketing with organizations such as collegiate athletic programs or professional organizations. My time at Flagler has helped me build confidence, communication skills, and adaptability—qualities that are essential in the fast-paced sports industry. Ultimately, I hope to make an impact by helping organizations connect more deeply with their audiences while creating campaigns that are not only successful, but memorable.
