Completing your college application isn’t a race, but a good head start can still help keep you on track. From gathering transcripts and completing essays to reviewing requirements and meeting deadlines, there are several moving pieces that can be easy to overlook if you wait until the last minute.
According to Rinnert, one of the most common mistakes students make is rushing through the application process. Waiting until deadlines are just days away can lead to incomplete applications, missing required documents, or simple mistakes that could have been avoided with more review time.
"If you're unsure about a requirement or deadline, reach out to your admissions counselor," she said. "We're here to help throughout the process."
Starting early also gives students the opportunity to carefully proofread every part of their application before clicking "submit." Taking a few extra minutes to review the contents, check for spelling and grammar mistakes, and confirm that every response is accurate can make a meaningful difference.
Students should also regularly check their email for updates from the admissions office and keep track of any outstanding requirements. Staying engaged throughout the process can help ensure no important deadlines or documents are missed.
2. Let Your Authentic Story Shine
While grades, coursework, and extracurricular activities are important, they only tell part of a student's story. Prospective students are encouraged to view their application as an opportunity to introduce themselves beyond the numbers.
"The strongest applications are the ones that genuinely reflect who you are, not who you think a college wants you to be," Rinnert said. "We already see your grades and activities, so use your application to share what has shaped you, what you're passionate about, and who you are outside the classroom."
Authenticity is equally important. While artificial intelligence can be a useful tool for brainstorming ideas or proofreading, students are encouraged to make sure their essays reflect their own voice and experiences. The goal is to help admissions counselors get to know the person behind the application, not just the achievements listed on it.
3. Choose the Application That Works Best for You
Prospective students have two ways to apply to Flagler College: through the Common Application or Flagler's application. When applying to Flagler, students receive equal consideration regardless of which option they choose.
The biggest difference comes down to convenience. The Common Application allows students to complete one application and submit it to multiple colleges, making it a practical choice for those applying to several institutions. Students who are applying only to Flagler or prefer to apply directly through the college may find Flagler's application to be the better fit.
Whichever application students choose, they can be confident that every application is reviewed using the same holistic admissions process. Prospective students should also know that Flagler is a test-optional institution. Most applicants are not required to submit ACT, SAT, or CLT scores, although standardized test scores are still required for homeschooled and international applicants.
4. Don’t Skip the Extras
Every application submitted to Flagler receives an individual review.
