Flagler College is pleased to announce a $25,000 pledge from Deane ’97 and Rachel Gauthier to name the Deane '97 and Rachel Gauthier Bench in Ponce’s Birdcage East.

The gift will support the Historic Preservation of Ponce Hall and efforts to protect the building’s architectural significance while adapting its features for modern use.

"It’s an honor to help preserve a place like Ponce Hall,” said Deane. “Too many things these days are temporary and easily thrown away, but this building represents something real, permanent, and meaningful to the Flagler community. I might not have lived on campus as a student, but its history still left a huge mark on me. We want to ensure it keeps doing that for years to come."

Opened in Spring 2024 following extensive renovations, the Birdcage is a third-floor study area for students and features a distinctive cupola-shaped bench from which the space takes its name. As part of the Hotel Ponce de Leon’s original design, the Birdcage once functioned as a light shaft, channeling sunlight from the building’s dome into the Rotunda below. Today, the restored space blends the Hall’s rich history with a modern academic purpose.

"We thank Deane and Rachel for their generosity and commitment to Ponce’s architectural heritage," said John Delaney, President of Flagler College. "Their gift is a lasting tribute to one of the Hall’s most iconic areas and strengthens our ongoing efforts to care for this extraordinary building in ways that last.”

Through continued investment in restoration, maintenance, and student-centered spaces, donors like the Gauthiers are ensuring Ponce Hall remains a source of pride not only for the College community but also for the State of Florida’s cultural identity.
