On the day of his graduation, Flagler alumnus Aaron Sagers took his family on an unofficial ghost tour of St. Augustine, showing them the most haunted spots of the city and telling stories of the Hotel Ponce De Leon, including a floor tile that Henry Flagler’s face is supposedly emblazoned on. He wore his cap and gown the entire time.

Flagler Professors June Ann LeFors and Jennifer Catalano created the FlagSHIP Deaf EcoSystem Course with the sole mission of further connecting Flagler College to the Deaf community of St. Augustine. Their goal in creating the course was to teach students ways that local businesses can be more inclusive to Deaf individuals. With the help of Flagler- alumni owned local businesses, they’ve been able to do just that.

In 1988, the month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month was codified as a national period of observance recognizing the cultures and contributions of people in the U.S. who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This month of celebration, which begins on Sept. 15, also coincides with the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua reminding us to recognize the rich history of Latin American countries. “Hispanic Heritage Month to me means celebrating my culture and who I am,” senior Kandy Marroquin said. “It also reminds me to appreciate what my family has worked hard for.”

As a transfer student, Amber Blackmon was faced with a less-than-typical college experience. But upon arriving to Flagler College, she eagerly pursued opportunities that integrated her into the campus community and allowed her to make a lasting impact.

In 1964, when the doors of historically white churches in St. Augustine remained closed to African Americans, the entry to 132 Oviedo Street — then the Church of Christ - ushered in a new era of worship. For the first time in the city's history, white and Black congregants prayed together, beneath the same roof, shoulder to shoulder.

After graduating from Flagler College, many alumni choose to stay in the region, pursuing their passions and making the community an even more vibrant place to live.

The Rotunda of Ponce de Leon Hall is a magnificently ornate and spacious focal point of Flagler College’s campus. And every holiday season since 1985, the College has sought to decorate the space with an equally spectacular Christmas Tree that serves as a constant symbol of Flagler’s holiday spirit for students, employees, and alumni alike.

For almost 20 years, Professor Barbara Blonder has been a beloved faculty member of Flagler’s Natural Sciences Department. During her time at Flagler, Blonder has left a lasting impact on the College. She has served as Director of Undergraduate Research, Chair of the Faculty Senate, and was an instrumental figure in establishing the Coastal Environmental Science major. In 2020, Blonder extended her impact into the local community, being elected as a Commissioner for the City of St. Augustine.

Most students only get the chance to live in Ponce Hall for one or two years during their time at Flagler, but Trustee and donor Rick Groux was lucky enough to spend the entirety of his college experience living there.

As an artist, one of Sasha Wortzel’s central passions is cinematography. But over the past few years, this passion has led to experimentation in expanded cinema.
