Recently, Flagler College students were invited to show off their creativity and personality through a room decorating contest. From personal touches that brought a little piece of home to campus to spaces designed to reflect each student’s individual style, the entries showcased the many ways students make their rooms feel like their own.
After reviewing the submissions, three rooms stood out from the rest. One student took home the grand prize, while three others earned runner-up honors for their creative and thoughtfully decorated spaces.
Meet the three finalists and hear what inspired them to make their Flagler rooms feel like home.
🏆 Grand Prize: Sophia Wurth
Location: Sebastian House
Sophia Wurth took home the grand prize for her thoughtfully decorated room, which includes a special connection to home.
“My favorite part of my room is the wallpaper boards we created using the same wallpaper I have at home. Since this is my first time moving away from home, having that same wallpaper in my Flagler room makes it feel like I have a little piece of home with me. Those personal touches have made my room feel more comfortable and helped make the transition to living on campus feel special,” said Wurth
🥈 Runners-Up: Jilly Young & Gia Lowe
Location: Cedar House
Roommates Jilly Young and Gia Lowe earned runner-up honors for their Cedar House space, bringing their personalities and creative touches together to create a room that feels like their own.
“My room is a place where I can go back to and feel at home. What I think makes it feel super cozy is the use of lighting. Instead of overhead lights, we love natural/lamp lighting. Blankets and cozy pillows are a must! Living on campus has been a joy and I am super pleased with the location of my residence hall and the convenience of it,” said Lowe.
🥈 Runner-Up: Ashley Macias Espinosa
Location: Lewis House
Ashley Macias Espinosa also earned runner-up honors for a room designed to feel like home while reflecting her personality. For Ashley, creating a comfortable space has been an important part of her experience living on campus.
“I definitely wanted my room to feel like home while also expressing my personality. With that being said, I tried to make it feel as much like my room back home as possible,” said Espinosa.
Ashley also credits her positive experience to having a roommate she works well with and enjoying the experience of living just a short walk from campus.
“Having a good roommate plays a big role in that, and I’m very glad that my roommate and I work so well together,” said Espinosa.
