FlagSHIP FAQs

• A highlight of the experiential learning and high-impact practices that define your Flagler College education!
• FlagSHIP courses are brief (2-3 weeks) classes that run before or after Spring Semester in your second year. 
• Course formats may include international and domestic study-away trips, local community engagement, research alongside professors, and interactive seminar-style courses on-campus.
• These immersive learning opportunities will expose students to diverse people and points of view, improve intercultural competence, and illuminate the complex systems (social, cultural, environmental, economic, political, and physical) that shape an increasingly interdependent world.

• Yes! All FlagSHIP courses are 3 credit hours and satisfy the Core FlagSHIP Requirement.
• All FlagSHIP courses are taken pass/fail rather than letter-graded.  This is because the point of a FlagSHIP is the immersive learning experience itself.

• Students choose and register for their FlagSHIP as first-year students during April of their first spring semester enrolled at Flagler.
• Students take their FlagSHIP a year later, either in January or May.

• Example: A student enrolls at Flagler College in the Fall of 2026.  This student chooses their FlagSHIP and registers in April of 2027.  The student takes their FlagSHIP in January or May of 2028.
• Example: A student enrolls at Flagler College in the Spring of 2027.  This student chooses their FlagSHIP and registers in April of 2027. The student takes their FlagSHIP in January or May of 2028.

• Students may view FlagSHIP course options in March of their first spring semester at Flagler College. Course details are posted in the student-facing Canvas course.
• Students should attend the FlagSHIP Fair held during the spring semester.  There, students will have the chance to meet faculty who are leading FlagSHIPs, see posters, and learn about the different options!  Also, candy!

• Registration for FlagSHIP is separate from regular registration and may be more involved, especially for courses that involve travel.  Be sure to contact your advisor or  FlagSHIP@flagler.edu if you have any questions.

• Registration for FlagSHIP courses happens during a student’s first spring semester at Flagler College. Students who miss the registration windows must email  FlagSHIP@flagler.edu with their preferred choices. Note that late registration may come with limited options, as seats fill up quickly.

• JanTerm courses will run for about two weeks before the spring semester begins. 

• Maymester courses will run for two to three weeks following the end of the spring semester.

• Tuition

  • Tuition for FlagSHIP is included in regular tuition and has no additional cost.

• Room costs for on-campus courses

  • JanTerm: For students living on campus during the regular school year, rooms are no additional cost.   

  • MayMester: Dorm rooms are available for an additional fee. Cost details are available on the student-facing Canvas course.

• Meal costs for on-campus courses

  • JanTerm: Meals are provided in the dining hall at no additional cost.

  • Maymester: The dining hall is closed. The Bistro is open starting on the first day of the Summer A term. Students provide their own meals.

• Travel Costs for travel courses

  • Study Abroad (outside the U.S.) and Study Away (within the U.S.) courses have additional travel costs for airfare, lodging, etc. These costs are listed for each class on the course webpage for the Flagler Center for Global Education.

• Supplementary Fees

  • On-campus courses may have additional materials, local travel, or technology fees.

  • All courses may provide opportunities to purchase local souvenirs, food items, extra excursions, etc. So, we suggest bringing some extra money for fun!

• Student-athletes should confer with their coaches about whether taking FlagSHIP in Janterm or Maymester makes the most sense for their schedule.

• Athletics recommends these terms for athletes taking FlagSHIP as a rule of thumb:

  • Baseball: Janterm

  • Basketball: Maymester

  • Golf: Janterm

  • Lacross: Janterm

  • Soccer: Janterm or Maymester

  • Softball: Janterm

  • Tennis: Janterm

  • Track and Field: Janterm

  • Volleyball: Janterm or Maymester

• Yes! Students interested in studying abroad/away can apply for travel scholarships.
• The scholarship application opens during the FlagSHIP Fair.
• The scholarship application is open for submissions for about a week. Late applications cannot be considered. Exact dates are provided on the student-facing Canvas course.
• Note: If you have not submitted a FAFSA for the upcoming academic year, you will need to do this, too!
• You will hear from Financial Aid before FlagSHIP registration with the results of your application.

No, you do not. FlagSHIP courses are not designated as any specific major or as honors. All FlagSHIP courses are coded as CDD, for Citizenship, Diversity, and Democracy. We encourage you to choose a course and an experience that interests you, regardless of your major.

• Yes, you can change your choice of FlagSHIP up to the Fall Semester add/drop deadline. 

• Students may add a non-travel FlagSHIP after the Fall semester add/drop deadline in limited circumstances based on program availability.

• Email FlagSHIP@flagler.edu for more information.

• All students are required to depart as a group from the airport determined by the faculty leader – generally this will be either MCO or JAX.
• At the end of the course, students will depart as a group from the airport chosen by the faculty member.
• Different trips may have different options for students who wish to make unique travel arrangements. Please check the individual trip webpage and consult with the Center for Global Education.

We understand that life happens and that students may need to back out of a travel course due to time or cost considerations.  We’ve worked to create a cancellation schedule that is fair to the students.

Please note that the $800 deposit is not refundable.

The cancellation policy and exact dates are provided on our student-facing Canvas course. Students are given this information directly and asked to sign an acknowledgement of understanding during the application process. Exceptions to the cancellation policy cannot be made.  Students are encouraged to acquire trip cancellation insurance (information about cancellation insurance can be found on the program listing online).

JanTerm Travel Courses

• An $800 non-refundable deposit is due shortly after initial registration in the Spring or Summer of the year before travel. Students pay this initial deposit on CashNet.
• Initial Registration for FlagSHIP occurs in the Spring or Summer of the year before the course.
  • For travel courses, students apply for college travel via the Center for Global Education shortly after registration. Students who sign up for travel courses are sent emails with instructions on how to do this.
  • Once the travel application is approved, students will receive instructions on completing the next step to commit to the program and pay the deposit. All payments will be made through CashNET. Proof of payment (receipt) is required as part of the Center for Global Education application process. Students must complete all application stages to stay enrolled in the program.
• The due date to pay your balance for Janterm trip costs is posted on the student-facing Canvas course.  You can pay the balance on the Student Accounts portal on MyFlagler.

Maymester Travel Courses

• The $800 non-refundable deposit is due shortly after initial registration in the Spring or Summer of the year before travel. Students pay this as part of their Study Abroad applications. Payments are made through CashNET.
  • Initial Registration for FlagSHIP occurs in the Spring or Summer of the year before the course.
  • For travel courses, students apply for college travel via the Center for Global Education shortly after registration. Students who sign up for travel courses are sent emails with instructions on how to do this.
  • Once the travel application is approved, the student pays the initial $800 deposit.
• The due date to pay your balance for Maymester trip costs is posted on the student-facing Canvas course. You can pay the balance on the Student Accounts portal on MyFlagler.

• Students who enter Flagler College with 60+ credits or an AA are exempt from the FlagSHIP requirement.
• Any student living on campus during the spring semester and traveling for Maymester may request a no-cost extension of their housing until the start of Maymester.
• During FlagSHIP registration, study abroad applications and deposits are submitted through the study abroad website.
• All FlagSHIP change requests made after the add/drop period must be emailed to FlagSHIP@flager.edu.
• Students who withdraw from Flagler College can no longer participate in a FlagSHIP course. Travel fees may still be due.
• Only actively enrolled Flagler students are eligible to participate in FlagSHIP courses and travel.
• JanTerm dining is available in the Dining Hall. MayMester Dining is available in the Bistro. Further information about dining options will be made available.
