Decoding D-Hall: What's with all the Cherubs?

Cherubs & Grapes
Cherubs & Grapes
College campuses are no strangers to parties--and neither was the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Just below the minstrel balconies in the central park of the dining hall, and on either side, green panels line the walls, decorated with cherubs holding bunches of grapes and spoons. These represent Dionysus (Greek), or Bacchus (Roman), the god of wine and revelry.
In art history, grapes are often symbols of abundance, fertility, and celebration. They symbolize prosperity; something Henry Flagler wanted every one of his guests to feel in his hotel. (And also something required to afford it!)
