Tip(s) for students applying for Financial Aid
Complete the FAFSA annually, even if you think you may not qualify for Federal Aid. Even if the assistance you receive is nothing more than a Direct Unsubsidized Loan, the interest rate on the Direct Unsubsidized Loan may be less than what you would pay on a private loan–a nonfederal loan made by a lender such as a bank, credit union, state agency, or a school. Don’t let grants and loans be your only option to pay for school, look for scholarships within your community. Get out to your local non-profit organizations to shake hands and ask what the requirements are to apply for a scholarship with that organization. Talk with Guidance Counselors, Teachers, or employers (yours and any of your families). They may know of organizations or local businesses that may offer scholarship to students of a particular major, interest, or exchange for work or volunteer hours.
Tip(s) for parents applying for Financial Aid
Check for Institutional Financial Aid deadlines and create a plan with your student so that you don’t miss out on qualifying institutional or State based aid.
When considering loans to help pay for college or career school, parents need to be as upfront with their children as possible. Everyone should be aware of what they can afford and how much they are willing to borrow and pay.
In addition, contact your student’s Financial Aid Counselor for any financial aid questions or processes you don’t understand. We are here to minimize stress for both you and your student.
