My education at Flagler College laid a strong foundation for my academic journey at Columbia University. At Flagler, I developed critical thinking and communication skills, which have been essential in tackling the rigorous coursework at Columbia. The close connections I built with my professors were impactful—they believed in my potential, always encouraged me, and helped with my confidence in my abilities and curiosity for learning. Their support taught me the importance of trusted mentors guiding and supporting you. These experiences gave me the confidence to aim high and face challenges with an open mind and determination.
What inspired you to move to the New York City metropolitan area (NYC), and how did your journey lead you there?

Moving to New York City has been a transformative chapter in my life. Born and raised in Bolivia and having lived abroad in Rwanda and Tanzania, I developed a deep appreciation for diversity and resilience. These qualities resonate with New York City’s dynamic energy.
My time at Flagler College was pivotal in broadening my horizons and shaping the passions that have guided my journey to where I am today.
Being accepted into Columbia University’s Master of Science in Sustainability Management program was the perfect opportunity to merge my global experiences and education into the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Here, I’ve found a community that challenges and inspires me daily to grow and make a difference.
What are your current academic goals, and how has studying at Columbia University in NYC contributed to your personal and professional growth?
My current academic goal is to deepen my understanding of sustainability across various career fields while exploring different ways to create meaningful change in communities affected by social and environmental challenges. Studying at Columbia University has immersed me in an environment of passionate classmates and professors who push me to think critically and approach problems from multiple perspectives. New York City itself has been a living classroom, inspiring me to connect local efforts to global solutions. The experience of living and learning in New York City has made me more confident, adaptable, and determined to make a positive change in the world.
What advice would you give to Flagler students who are considering pursuing further education or starting their careers in NYC?

My advice to Flagler students considering further education or starting their careers in New York City is to embrace the city’s energy and opportunities while staying grounded.
New York City can initially feel overwhelming, so building a routine and taking time for yourself is important.
Prioritize connecting with people—whether through your program, professional events, or casual meet-ups—as networking in this city can lead to incredible opportunities.
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take on challenges; the lessons you will gain along the way will be invaluable for your personal and professional growth.
Can you describe a turning point in your academic journey that was influenced by living and studying in NYC?
Attending Climate Week in New York City was a turning point in my journey. Being part of events where leaders, activists, and experts come together to discuss global challenges opened my eyes to the immense impact one city can have on the world. The conversations I participated in inspired me to think bigger and approach challenges creatively. Living in New York has also taught me the value of resilience and adaptability, especially when balancing my studies with opportunities to network and grow professionally. Being here has been a powerful reminder that the right environment can connect you with incredible opportunities that will push you further into your future career.
How has living in NYC impacted your ability to build and leverage academic and professional networks?
Living in NYC has been amazing for building and growing my academic and professional networks. The city is full of events, workshops, and conferences where I have met inspiring people from all over the world. Studying at Columbia University allowed me to meet classmates and professors who are leaders in their fields, which has been incredibly motivating.

I also highly value New York City’s unique opportunities, like being able to connect with organizations such as the United Nations. These connections have grown my network and provided a platform to collaborate with like-minded people who share my goals to make a meaningful impact.
What are some unexpected challenges you faced when you first moved to NYC, and how did you overcome them?

One of the unexpected challenges I faced when I first moved to New York City was the constant temptation to participate in the city's endless events and activities. It was easy to feel like I was missing out. Still, I quickly realized that balancing my academic responsibilities had to come first—I had to learn to prioritize and overcome the fear of missing out (FOMO). Over time, I understood the importance of taking time for myself, learning that it is okay to step back and recharge. Allowing myself to rest helped me maintain balance and avoid burnout, which has been crucial to staying productive in such a fast-paced city.
How do you balance your studies and personal life in a city as dynamic as NYC?
Balancing studies and personal life in NYC is all about planning and staying flexible. With so much happening in the city, I make sure to prioritize my academic work and realize that I cannot be everywhere at once. I also take advantage of the city by exploring neighborhoods, attending events, and meeting new people, which helps me recharge and stay inspired. I’ve learned that finding time for myself, whether it’s a walk in Central Park or a coffee break in a quiet café, is just as important as staying on top of assignments.
What are your favorite aspects of living in NYC, both academically and personally?
My favorite aspects of living in NYC are the endless opportunities and the city's different activities. Academically, I love being at Columbia University, where I am surrounded by inspiring professors and peers and have access to global events and resources. Personally, the city’s energy, always buzzing with life, keeps me motivated—truly the city that never sleeps.

I enjoy exploring world-class museums, trying amazing food, and spending time recharging in beautiful spaces like Central Park. Every day in New York City brings something new to discover, making it an exciting place to live, learn, and dream.
