On Thursday, February 10th, Dr. Susan Richbourg Parker will kickstart the series with her lecture titled “They Die Here as Elsewhere: Epidemics in Colonial Florida.”
Dr. Susan R. Parker holds her masters and PH.D from the University of Florida with research interests in the colonial United States, colonial Latin America, and anthropology. She is currently historian for the St. Johns County Clerk of the Court and a former executive director of the St. Augustine Historical Society. Her edited book Oldest City: History of Saint. Augustine (published in 2019 by the St. Augustine Historical Society), won the 2020 William L. Proctor Award from the Historic St. Augustine Research Institute. Her weekly column, “Oldest City,” is published in The St. Augustine Record.
On Thursday, March 3rd, Dr. Thomas Graham will continue the series with his lecture titled “From Yellow Jack to Spanish Flu.”
Dr. Graham presently is Professor Emeritus of History in the Humanities Department. He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Florida in 1973, with MA and BA degrees came from Florida State University. Dr. Graham's research interest is in nineteenth-century United States history.
Dr. Graham’s books include Flagler's St. Augustine Hotels (Pineapple Press, 2004), The Awakening of St. Augustine (St. Augustine Historical Society, 1978), Charles H. Jones, Journalist and Politician of the Gilded Age (University Presses of Florida, 1990) and Mr. Flagler's St. Augustine (University Press of Florida, 2014). He is a past president and honorary life member of the St. Augustine Historical Society and has served on the Board of Directors of the Florida Historical Society.
The Historic St. Augustine Research Institute (HSARI) is a collaborative project of Flagler College and the University of Florida, supported by the St. Augustine Foundation, Inc.
Its purpose is to encourage, coordinate and disseminate active academic research related to the history, archaeology and historical architecture of St. Augustine, Florida, and to apply this research in support of historic preservation in the city.
