There’s that old Franciscan saying, “Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” We like this saying because it let’s us off the hook. It leaves us with the impression, “If I just act like a person of faith, than I don’t having to actually talk about my faith.” But various studies across the United States show that both teenagers, and adults for that matter, are less and less articulate about their faith. They are active participants at their local churches, but when they are asked to speak of their faith, they are speechless. This is problematic because if someone has a hard time talking about something, that person often has a hard time believing that thing is true. If we can't talk about our faith, we will have a hard time taking our faith seriously.
Loving Beyond the Boundaries
Through out the Gospels Jesus steps out-of-bounds to spend time with cultural outsiders. He pulled the disciples beyond the boundaries of their comfort to show them how far the Gospel goes. We will examine Biblical stories to see the importance of “loving beyond the boundaries.” As a group we will examine the boundaries of the culture we live in and see how we can be drawn to the uncomfortable fringes of ministry for the sake of the students we work with.
Missional Entrepreneurship for the Curious, the Bored, and the Desperate
Do you have a crazy idea for how your youth group might have a more lively presence in your community. (Discipleship on fishing boats? A chicken wing ministry? Transforming your atrium into a farmer's market?) Drawing from design thinking, this session will invigorate church leaders to look outside of the box of what it looks like to engage in missional entrepreneurship. Whether or not you see yourself as the creative sort, this is a fast-paced, practical workshop designed to take your imagination of an idea to the next level.
From Service Hours to Foot Washers - Making Service an Integral Part of Youth Discipleship
Ever feel like service is an afterthought in your planning for ministry? At the Last Supper, Jesus demonstrated to the disciples in the upper room that they should be foot-washers - that's no afterthought, but an integral characteristic of discipleship. Participants will reflect on John 13 and what it means for Jesus' disciples to live in solidarity with the poor, discussing practical strategies for mentoring young people in this aspect of the Christian life. Come find out more about how you can lead your teens closer to Christ through service and work for justice in your ministry, church, and community.
Hard Conversations and Mentoring Young Adults
Ministry with the next generation can be fun, innovative and life-giving when things are going well. But when things aren't going well, it can be difficult to find the right words, the best approach and the perfect timing for hard conversations. We don't want to lose these emerging adults, but we don't want them to lose out on all God has for them either. In this workshop, we will discuss some mindsets and tools that can help next generation leaders find courageous humility and engage in crucial conversations.
Where Mental Health and Youth Collide
Based on a unique perspective of the reality in which teenagers live, we will address mental health and our youth. In helping to bring you clarity as you work with students, this workshop will focus on three key points: helping teens tolerate distress, how to help students live at peace with themselves, and how to walk alongside hurting teens without taking on their responsibility.
"For the third year in a row our youth ministry team of staff, interns and volunteers look forward to attending the Youth Ministry Forum at Flagler College. It is a great time of spiritual renewal for our leaders as we share a few days away together, hear awesome keynote speakers and discuss practical topics in break out sessions. This event is a priority for enriching our leadership team."
