Safety Procedures

• Follow information and directions given via Flagler College communication channels such as College email, this Website, and Omnilert notifications.
• Flagler College’s Office of Campus Safety and Security monitors all potential tropical storms and hurricanes reported by the National Weather Service. As the weather approaches this office will stay in contact with the college community as decisions are made regarding class cancellations and any possible campus evacuations.

• Run – If you are confident you can exit the area safely, run away as fast as possible. Run in a zig-zag pattern if necessary to avoid being an easy target. Warn others as you go. 
• Hide – If unable to safely leave the area, follow Shelter in Place procedures.
• Fight – As a last resort, and if your life is in immediate danger, improvise weapons and attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
• Follow all instructions given by police officers. Keep your hands empty and in plain view.
• Do not activate the fire alarm.
• Use vehicles, bushes, trees, or anything that could block the shooter’s view.
• Play dead if there are victims in the area and no alternative evasive action is possible.

• If told to evacuate, immediately leave the building via the closest safe exit.
• If unable to exit, call 911 to report your location to local authorities, or wave a white or light-colored cloth from a window to alert first responders of your location.
• Exit the building and proceed at least 300 feet away, as ordered by emergency personnel or Flagler College Security personnel.
• Do not attempt to re-enter the building for any reason until the “All-Clear” is announced by Security.
• Do not attempt to carry or remain with anyone who cannot be safely evacuated due to mobility impairment. Assist them to the closest safe Area of Refuge and report their location to appropriate personnel immediately upon exiting.

• If necessary to further evacuate the campus following an emergency building evacuation, you will be notified by Security at the scene and/or via Omnilert notifications.

• Move to a safe location inside a room, out of view from doors or windows.
• Close and lock doors if possible. Do not open door unless notified by officials.
• Turn off lights and all equipment.
• Remain quiet and silence cell phones.
• If safe to do so, one person should call 911 to notify authorities of your location.
• Do not pull the fire alarm.
• If instructed to do so, use whatever materials available to seal cracks around the doors, windows, and any vents into the room. Turn off ventilation system if possible.

• If you discover a fire call 911 and activate the nearest fire alarm pull station.
• If you are trained and you think you can put out the fire, use a fire extinguisher. Always maintain a clear exit from the area.
  • P - Pull the pin located in the extinguisher's handle.
  • P - Purge the extinguisher to make sure it is operational.
  • A - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  • S - Squeeze or press the handle.
  • S - Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it is out
• When fire alarm sounds follow Building Evacuation Procedures above.
• Do not stop the evacuation even if the fire alarm is silenced.
• Do not use the elevators.
• If you encounter smoke try to stay low to the floor as you evacuate.
• Check door handles for heat before opening

• Evacuate the building as soon as possible. Do not stop to retrieve personal possessions or make phone calls.
• If possible while evacuating, activate the closest fire alarm.
• Watch for falling debris.
• Be prepared to crawl as smoke, poisonous gases, and heat rise.
• If you are unable to evacuate, call 911 or wave a white or light-colored cloth from a window to alert first responders of your location.
• If trapped in debris, do not light a match. Do not move about or kick up dust. Rhythmically tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can hear where you are. Shouting can cause the inhalation of dangerous amounts of dust.

• Do not activate fire alarms.
• Seek shelter indoors and go to the interior of the building away from windows if possible.
• If possible take cover under a sturdy object. Protect head, face, and neck.
• Stay away from windows, glass, and items that might fall.

• Avoid water fixtures, telephone lines, and anything electrical.

• Notify Security immediately if you encounter a person on campus that is ill, injured, exhibiting troubling behavior, or otherwise in crisis.
• Do not attempt to move a seriously injured person.
• If it is safe to do so, stay with the person until additional help arrives.

• Students with disabilities must self-identify to the Director of the Disability Resource Center to develop a personal emergency plan. Students who have self-idetified ambulation disorders, mobility and hearing impairments, and visual disorders to the DRC will be included on a list for emergency response by Campus Safety and Security.
• Any employee or guest who needs assistance receiving alerts, evacuating, or sheltering in place in the event of emergency should self-identify to Campus Safety and Security.
• Be familiar with emergency procedures and evacuation routes.
