Fulbright Scholarship
Overview
The Fulbright Program fosters mutual understanding through one-on-one cultural exchange.
Two types of Grants are available:
- Research/Study Grants- Spend a year abroad in a chosen country to pursue graduate study, and/or conduct independent research.
- English Teaching Grant - Spend one year as an assistant to teach English as a second language in primary, secondary or university settings (ETA program).
All Fulbright grantees also engage the community through a personal project of their own design.
Award
The program awards approximately 2,000 grants annually and operates in more than 150 countries.
Support includes:
- Round-trip transportation to the host country
- Funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs, based on the cost of living in the host country
- Limited accident and health insurance
Requirements
- Must have obtained a bachelor’s degree before the start of the grant.
- Must be a U.S. citizen
Qualifications for competitive application
- Strong academic record
- Excellent letters of recommendation
- Study/Research applicants: research experience and strong incentive to study in chosen country or postgraduate program
- ETA applicants: experience working with youth (teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring) and a strong rationale for teaching in your chosen country
- Experience with cross cultural adaptation
- Alignment in long term goals and Fulbright award
- Some countries require language skills
