Capturing Characters through Conversations, Conventions & Cartoons
Ages 6 –14,May 29—June 1 9:00 to 4:00
Campers will channel their creativity—in pictures and words by creating comics. The job of a comic creator is to tell a story. This might be as simple as a “joke-a-day” comic using six panels to deliver the punchline, or a multi-page comic with a three-act composition. Our days will begin with team building activities which are AVID researched based and will ensure campers are part of a social learning community. Through conversations with peers, campers will choose an overall theme, characters, and setting for their comics. Comics may be fiction or non-fiction or a little of both! Characters may be historic figures, super heroes, or perhaps fairies with magical powers or even transformers. Imaginably a camper might decide to write a comic about him/herself and a pet iguana. Family friendly comics will be used to spark interest and ideas and used as a model for various styles of writing. Campers will learn to sketch what their characters look like, in both words and drawings. Additionally, campers will gain confidence in their public speaking skills as they share their work during our Comic Celebration. In addition to writing workshops, we will embark on a trolley tour and several walking fieldtrips in the old Ponce de Leon Hotel and historic St Augustine. During these field trips, students will ignite their imaginations for more ideas for their comics. To give our brains a rest, after lunchtime, we will take a dip in the pool and join our new friends in the campus recreation room for a game of ping pong or foosball. For additional information, feel free to contact:
