This course prepares students to take the Mental Health Technician Certification exam through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). Please note that the individual state requirements may vary. Students will be responsible to check with their state’s governing body for state specific requirements.​

The cost of the course includes the cost of the certification exam.


Course Overview:

In this course, students will learn fundamentals about what one would need to have in order to be a mental health technician. Throughout this course, participants will gain an understanding of the history of mental health nursing, the basics of this type of care patients receive, as well as the ethics needing to be understood when caring for patients. Once this has been mastered, students will gain an understanding of developmental psychology throughout one's lifespan and how sociocultural influences can impact one's mental health. The majority of the course will require students to understand various types of mental disorders and how they can affect a patient's health as well as others they may interact with. At the conclusion of the course, participants will gain an understanding of common mental health issues in various stages of one's life and how care can be provided to them. Once the course has been completed, one will be skilled to become a mental health technician and be able to handle these and other commonly-seen mental health issues in the society we live in today.

Students will:
  • Learn about the history of mental health illnesses and fundamental basics of communicating with patients that are diagnosed or have mental impairments.
  • Comprehend and understand the ethics associated with treating patients with mental health disorders.
  • Review and apply various types of techniques focused on nursing processes and mental health treatments.
  • Review, learn and understand about numerous types of behavioral disorders that can impact a patient's mental health.
  • Understand how age can impact various types of mental disorders, outcomes, and treatment plans.
  • Analyze and review strategies to help patients that may have been abused or been succumbed to violence as denoted in the text


Course Outline:

Lesson 1: History of Mental Health Nursing

In this lesson, students will gain an understanding of the history of mental health illnesses and how the industry has changed from the time it was more of a discovery than what it is now. Students should have a firm understanding of the background before continuing on with the other lessons in the course.

Lesson 2: Mental Health Nursing Fundamentals

The second lesson of the course looks at the fundamentals of communication and how it may impact the diagnosis and treatment of persons that are diagnosed with mental health disorders. Different communication types, adaptive techniques, and understanding of patient privacy laws and how best to handle patients with these types of impairments are also discussed. Much like any other health profession, anyone that interacts with a patient can be held accountable and responsible for potential outcomes for better or worse.

Lesson 3: Developmental Psychology & Sociocultural Influences

In this lesson of the course, students will take time to review the stages of human development and how developmental psychology changes from the time we are born to the time we pass away. Additionally, participants of the course will look at sociocultural influences that can greatly alter one's mental state. Whether that be symbols, trends, fads, or even the people we interact with as a family or otherwise, they can make a significant impact on one's mental health.

Lesson 4: Mental Nursing Processes & Treatments

This lesson of the course is one that must be carefully reviewed by students taking the course because this provides the necessary foundational knowledge to be an excellent mental health technician. Topics reviewed in this lesson include assessing a patient, properly diagnosing their issues, and generally following a five (5) step sequential process to assist them towards better mental health. Additionally, understanding and working through different coping and defense mechanisms are reviewed here. Treatments both in the contemporary sense and alternative methods round out this lesson's contents.

Lesson 5: Anxiety, Bipolar, and Depressive Disorders

The fifth lesson begins a comprehensive review of various types of disorders that humans commonly have. Some of the most frequently diagnosed are anxiety, bipolar, and depression. Depending on the patient or client, it is entirely possible that these are diagnosed at the same time or overtime. Students should review this section carefully as these can be symptoms of other disorders discussed in the next couple of lessons. Treatment plans are provided as guidelines to ensure clients or patients of these can manage or recover from symptoms resulting from these impediments.

Lesson 6: Suicide, Personality, Schizophrenia, & Somatic Symptom Disorders

Suicide is one of the sad tragedies of mental disorders that can be prevented and avoided with mental health clients or patients. This lesson goes into depth about that topic as well as other commonly-seen personality disorders that one may inherit or develop over their lives. Similar to the previous lesson, suggested treatment plans and directives are provided to help one provide a treatment program that will manage any symptoms seen and keep them alive.

Lesson 7: Addictive, Eating, Neurocognitive, & Substance Disorders

The second to the final lesson of the course reviews other common disorders that mental health technicians and professionals at-large commonly interact with on a day-to-day basis. Topics in this part of the course look at delirium, dementia, and other neurocognitive disorders that are often observed. Other disorders which invoice not just mental health technicians and personnel but others that are reviewed here include addictions, eating, and substance abuse disorders. Naturally like the previous two (2) lessons, treatment plans and nursing interventions to help these clients and/or patients are provided as well.

Lesson 8: Mental Health Issues & Abuse Awareness

The final lesson of the course concludes with the review of common mental health issues that are often common in the world we live in. These are broken down into three (3) core categories: adolescence, postpartum, and aging populations. The final chapter of the course reviews proper procedures and information as to who to treat patients that were abused in some manner. Being able to treat clients or patients is an important task and having awareness of possible abuse that occurred is necessary to provide the best course of action for all involved (whether directly or indirectly).
