High school students from across the nation and our state will have the opportunity to learn about the academic disciplines of the humanities at Flagler College, specifically focused on St. Augustine, thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Florida Humanities Council.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. For the first time, student survey data was taken into consideration for the designation. More than 1,300 schools participated in the 2017-2018 survey with 849 receiving the designation.

Flagler College’s Women of Vision Advisory Board, which provides scholarships and opportunities for women who attend the college, welcomed six new members recently. They include Robin Borland, Letti Bozard, Araan Burnett, Lisa Chismark, Paula Fallon and Susan Joyner. 

Three students receiving diplomas at Flagler’s fall graduation ceremony represented a major milestone for the college: the first students to graduate from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Master’s Program. The college’s first master’s program was launched in 2016 as a distance-learning program, and Mary Catherine Serfilippi, Miranda McMillan Slusser, and Olivia Grace Williams joined more than 180 undergraduate students for the commencement on Dec. 9.

Craig Gordon, Washington Bureau Chief for Bloomberg News, will give a talk on “Trumping Fake News: Facts in the Age of Trump” at the Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in the college’s Lewis Auditorium, 14 Granada St.

Flagler College handed out more than 180 diplomas on Saturday at its fall commencement ceremonies, including to the college’s first three graduates from the Deaf/Hard of Hearing master’s program.

Local franchisees from one of the fastest growing fitness gyms in the country, Orangetheory Fitness, partnered with Flagler College Professor Leslie Gordon to offer her Consumer Behavior students internships at the end of the semester. Gordon’s Consumer Behavior class is a senior-level marketing course that blends studies of Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and Communication. 

Flagler College will hold its fall commencement ceremony at the Flagler College Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 9, for approximately 180 graduates, including the college’s first three grads from its new Deaf/Hard of Hearing master’s program.

WJCT and Flagler College will hold a preview on Nov. 27 of “Secrets of Spanish Florida: A Secrets of the Dead Special,” as well as a discussion about why this history is so important for everyone to know.

The Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College will hold a fall exhibition of work by the college’s graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts candidates from the Department of Art and Design. The exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 5-8 p.m. It will be on view on Friday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

More than 300 Flagler College students, faculty, staff and alumni fanned out across St. Augustine on Saturday for a day of community service that benefitted 14 local nonprofit organizations that ranged from an emergency shelter for abused women to a local reserve for unwanted exotic animals.

But this year has seen a massive shift. “This fall, we received more mail than we’ve ever received before,” he said.

Flagler College dedicated its newest residence hall in honor of former President William T. Abare, Jr. on Oct. 25 with a ribbon cutting. The building, named Abare Hall, is part of a $23 million complex on Malaga Street adjacent to the FEC Residence Halls on the banks of St. Augustine’s San Sebastian River. It houses 159 students in 75 suites.

Flagler College has once again been ranked second in U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best Colleges guide for the Best Regional Colleges in the South, behind High Point University in North Carolina. This year, the college was also ranked sixth on the Best Value list in the South regional category for offering high-quality programs at an affordable cost.

Update on residence halls reopening and classes resuming

For the second time in a week, Flagler College has been named to a prominent magazine’s list of most beautiful colleges — this time in Southern Living. Last week, Cosmopolitan Magazine released its list of “30 of the Most Beautiful College Campuses in the World,” and top on the list was Flagler College.

Flagler College officially welcomed nearly 800 new students to the Flagler family Tuesday evening, during the college’s annual convocation ceremony in Lewis Auditorium. The students clutched railroad spikes, symbolic of their Flagler journey, as they listened to new President Dr. Joseph Joyner share his vision of great leadership and the core values that define the college.
