Judge Poland retires from Law program he helped launch at Flagler
Apr 13The founding director of Flagler College’s Law program, Professor Richard Poland, is retiring this year after serving the college for 25 years. Judge Poland, as he is often referred to on campus, has taught nearly 30 courses, fulfilled various leadership roles — including Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs — and has twice received the Faculty of the Year Award (2007-2008 and 2009-2010). -

PAD instructor shares expertise with Cato Institute in nation’s capital
Apr 11Dr. John N. O’Brien, an instructor in Flagler College’s Public Administration Department (PAD), provided a presentation to members of the Cato Institute — a public policy research organization in Washington, D.C. — on ways to increase employment opportunities for displaced and unemployed workers. During his visit, he also met on Capitol Hill with staff members of seven legislative offices to discuss strategies for developing legislation that embodied his presentation’s concepts. The proposal itself was developed in large part after class discussions while teaching a PAD course titled “The Public Economy,” which illuminates how U.S. government develops and executes economic policy. -

Flagler professor selected to participate in summer seminar at Yale

Final Community Lectures Series talk at Flagler to be held April 11
Mar 24Dr. James Pickett, associate professor of Communication at Flagler College, will be giving the college’s final Community Lectures Series talk this year titled “The Hidden Curriculum: The Decorum of Space, Time and Consumption in the Digital Age.” His lecture will be held on Tuesday, April 11 in the historic Solarium in Ponce Hall at 10 a.m. -
Incoming President Joyner recognized with Florida Education award
Mar 23The Florida Department of Education honored incoming Flagler College President and former St. Johns County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph G. Joyner with the 2016 Lavan Dukes District Data Leader of the Year award on March 23, at a meeting of the State Board of Education. During Joyner’s tenure, St. Johns has been one of only two districts to achieve an “A” grade every year since district grades were implemented in 2004, and in 2016, St. Johns was the highest performing school district in Florida. -
Flagler's technology director promoted to vice president
Mar 16Flagler College’s Joseph Provenza was recently promoted to the position of Vice President of Technology Services and Chief Information Officer. He was formerly the Director of Technology Services. -

Flagler professor’s book takes Silver Medal in Florida Book Awards competition
Feb 22A Flagler College professor’s in-depth study of the civil rights movement in northwest Florida has earned him a prestigious 2016 Florida Book Award for his book, titled “Beyond Integration: The Black Freedom Struggle in Escambia County, Florida, 1960-1980.” Dr. J. Michael Butler won the Silver Medal in the awards’ “General Non-Fiction” category. -
Education professor recognized by department for her dedication as chair
Feb 17At the Jan. 31 Education Department Advisory Committee dinner and meeting, Dr. Michele Gregoire was awarded an appreciation plaque by her colleagues, for her dedication over the past 13 years as the Department Chair. -

Stetson University honors Flagler’s Chancellor Dr. William Proctor
Feb 15Dr. William Proctor, former Flagler College president and current chancellor, was recently awarded Stetson’s University’s “Facilitator Award,” created for educators who embody the values and principles articulated in “The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University.” The 1999 book was written by author Robert D. Bickel and Peter Lake, and addresses universities’ responsibilities regarding student safety. -
Flagler College community members volunteer across county for day of service
Feb 11For a February day, Flagler College faculty, staff and students couldn’t ask for better weather to volunteer with local community organizations for the college’s biannual day of service on Saturday. Approximately 150 individuals assisted a dozen organizations across the county. -
President Abare recognized during monthly Faculty Senate meeting
Feb 9Flagler College faculty members expressed their gratitude for President William T. Abare, Jr.’s “tireless and single-minded dedication” to the college on Wednesday, during the monthly Faculty Senate meeting. The resolution, which was proposed in light of Abare’s forthcoming retirement, was approved unanimously by senators. -
Art professor to give talk on how sense of touch impacts critical thinking skills
Feb 8Flagler College Art Professor Laura Mongiovi will discuss how sensory experiences involving color and texture impact individuals’ critical thinking skills on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
