‘The Fear of Change,’ a Senior Conservatory Showcase

Dec 2, 2019

The Flagler College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the Senior Conservatory Showcase, with projects in “The Fear of Change” on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5 in Flagler College’s Lewis Auditorium. Featured senior directors include John Kearny and Jillianne Tamillo.

Kearny directs “Red” by John Logan, the story of master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken. Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, “Red” is a searing portrait of an artist's ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.

Tamillo wrote and directed “Brown Eyed Girl: An Ethnographic Documentary” theatre piece, a compilation of interviews and dialogue. The story follows the life of Ann Tamillo. Tamillo explains the events in her life when she had first met Johnny Matthews, an African-American male. Coming from a large family with a sheltered life, Ann faces racism and unacceptance when relations between Johnny and Ann begin.
