Scenes from Flagler's 2023 Move-In & Welcome Week
Sep 1, 2023
Last week, campus came to life again as we greeted three classes of returning students and 781 new faces to Flagler.
At the start of each academic year, Flagler College hosts Welcome Week- seven days of programming geared toward getting new students acclimated to campus and reenergizing returning students for the year to come. Starting with move-in and finishing with the traditional first-year Disney trip, Welcome Week is packed with tools to get students prepped for success and a line-up of activities to help them let loose with friends.
Check out these highlights from an action-packed Move-In and Welcome Week:
Aug. 18 & 19 | First year Move-In
Flagler was eager to welcome nearly 700 first-year students to the College’s incredible campus earlier this month. Students traveled from across the state and around the country to start their Flagler journey, bringing with them hopeful parents and excitement for the year ahead.
“It’s amazing getting to live in such a beautiful place, it feels completely surreal,” first-year Emily Neillands said.
“Work hard, party hard, go to class,” first-year parent Susan Slattery said. “It’s a privilege to be here, and a lot of people can’t be here. So, take everything you have and use it. Utilize your tools.”
“I’m excited for Welcome Week,” first-year McKenna Bailey said. “I saw there’s going to be a pool party, and I signed up for a movie night! I’m also excited to just walk around with my roommate because she’s only been here on campus once, so I’m going to show her around!”
Aug. 21 | A Tour of The St. Augustine Historical Society
Parents and incoming freshman were welcomed to learn about St. Augustine’s fascinating history on a historian-led tour of the St. Augustine Historical Society building and grounds.
Aug. 21 | Fitness Center Open House
Campus recreation welcomed Saints to Flagler with an open house of the fitness center and group fitness space. Students could drop by to check out the space, learn about our programs, or even apply for a job.
Aug. 21 | Casino Night
Students were welcomed to try their luck at Casino Night! The games included Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, and Texas Hold'Em. If students weren’t interested in trying their hand at cards, Student Engagement also hosted Karaoke.
Aug. 22 | Student Employment Job Fair
The Student Employment Job Fair was an opportunity for students to learn about on-campus employment opportunities and interview for campus jobs. The fair was an ideal setting for students to learn about the benefits of working on campus like flexible scheduling and an easy commute.
Aug. 22 | Convocation
Convocation ceremonies are a long-standing tradition among collegiate institutions meant to mark students’ entrance into higher education and welcome them into their new academic communities. Flagler’s Fall 2023 Convocation ceremony featured a processional of faculty and administrators, multiple speakers, and performances by the College’s student choir.
Aug. 23 | Bagels & Coffee with SGA
Students could enjoy free bagels and coffee while meeting their peer leadership in Flagler’s Student Government Association.
Aug. 24 | Involvement Fair
Flagler’s West Lawn came to life with representation from the College’s wide selection of student organizations. First-year and returning students were invited to peruse the clubs and activities that appealed to them at this beginning-of-the-year tabling event.
Aug. 25 | Open House at the Dock
For students curious about the watersports Flagler has to offer, Campus Recreation hosted an open house of “the Dock” behind Abare Hall to show off the kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing options offered to students.
Disney Trip
This long-standing Flagler tradition gave first-year students a magical experience, taking Saints on a trip to Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.
