Research on Flagler College website presented at national conference

Assistant Professor of Psychology, Dr. Tracy Litzinger, and her students Ray Van Allen, ’20, and Christina Ketner, ’20, collaborated with Director of Digital Strategy Holly Hill and Front-end Development Manager Mike Horn to evaluate the usability of the Flagler College website. This team of faculty, staff and students presented their research at the 2019 HighEdWeb Conference in Milwaukee, Wis. this October.

HighEdWeb is a national conference that annually invites professionals in higher education to explore digital issues unique to colleges and universities. The Flagler team presented a session titled “Weird Science: Using Psychology and Human Factors to Enhance the Student Digital Journey,” where they shared their research journey and the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration.

“The collaboration between faculty, staff, and students gave each of us a better understanding of the project because we saw it through three different lenses,” said Van Allen. She and Ketner were the only undergraduate students in attendance.

For Horn, this was his fourth time attending the conference, but first time presenting. “Seeing Ray and Christina deservedly receiving attention and praise from other higher education institutions was the best part of the conference,” he said.

“I am so thankful for the support of our mentors who assisted us in attending such a rewarding and knowledgeable conference,” said Ketner.

The conference brought Flagler to a national stage, allowing the research team to contribute to the digital world.

“I hope other schools will follow our lead and conduct some ‘weird science’ of their own!” said Litzinger.

This project doesn’t end with a national presentation. A second phase of research and data collection is expected to take place this spring. With continued efforts to integrate cross-disciplinary techniques, the website can be maintained to ensure it is usable for everyone.
