President Abare presides over final graduation

Apr 30, 2017

After 16 years, Flagler College President Dr. William T. Abare Jr. handed out diplomas to graduates for the final time on Saturday. Abare is set to retire as president this June, serving in the position since 2001. He has worked at the college for 46 years, and has the distinction of being at every Flagler graduation and seeing every one of the college’s nearly 17,000 alumni cross the stage.

Another 358 graduates received diplomas from him Saturday at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, followed by 14 more as he later presided over the Public Administration Program’s Spring ceremony at Lewis Auditorium.

Dr. Abare joined Flagler in 1971 as director and dean of Admissions, only three years after the founding of the college. He has also served as vice president of Academic Affairs, executive vice president and executive vice president and dean of Academic Affairs.

Dr. Abare will be succeeded by Dr. Joseph G. Joyner, former superintendent of the St. Johns County School District in St. Augustine. He was named Flagler’s next president in November of 2016.
