Power of the Purse® event to expand horizons

Mar 21, 2019

The 5th annual Power of the Purse® event on May 9 will follow the popular format that guests have enjoyed in the past, such as a cocktail/mocktail reception, a silent auction of designer handbags, a fine jewelry raffle, luncheon in the historic dining hall and a noteworthy speaker. This year, however, the Flagler College Women of Vision Advisory Board plans to broaden the scope of the fundraiser, which raises money for scholarships for deserving female students at the college.

With a bow to guest speaker Sylvia Longmire, the 2019 Power of the Purse® will encompass a travel theme that will be reflected throughout the event. Author Longmire travels around the world in her power wheelchair and writes about the accessibility of her destinations on her travel blog, “Spin the Globe.” The title of her remarks will be “How Fear, Travel and Laughter Can Free the Soul.”

The majority of items in the silent auction will remain designer hand bags such as Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, Brahmin, Tory Burch, Ralph Lauren, Brighton and Coach, but there will be more travel-related offerings such as colorful carry-on luggage, decorative tote bags, jewelry cases, cosmetic bags, etc. There will also be new items including a two-night stay and dinner at the Embassy Suites, dinners-for-two at Collage Restaurant and The Black Fly, and a cruise for two on the Schooner Freedom, just to name a few.

In addition, there will be a special table of 20 designer purses previously owned by the late Robin Cooper, co-founder of the Women of Vision and the Power of the Purse®, and donated by her husband Bradley Cooper.

“Robin’s handbags are not only classy and beautiful like she was, but serve as a memory or keepsake of her dedication to the Women of Vision,” said Cooper family friend and Women of Vision Board Member Janice Long.

This year’s silent auction will also feature a greater number of children’s handbags and totebags, a coral beach bike, artwork and much more.

As in previous years, the Power of the Purse® event will include a jewelry raffle. This year’s stunning pieces have been donated by Blue Water Jewelers, Carter’s, Nettles Fine Jewelry, Short Dog Jewelry and Diamonds on the Plaza.

The Women of Vision Advisory Board is still welcoming sponsors at various levels.
