New chair for the Flagler College Hospitality and Tourism Management Advisory Board
Feb 26, 2020
Al Luciano, a 40-year hospitality industry veteran, has been named Chair of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Advisory Board at Flagler College. The next meeting of the board will be on Feb. 4 on the campus of Flagler College.
“As a former student I felt a need and desire to give back to an institution that provided me with so many life lessons, intellectual growth and business opportunities,” said Luciano.
He has served on the board for the past four years and attended Flagler College in the late 1970s. He received his bachelor’s at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in hotel, travel and restaurant management. He has worked for major hotel brands Marriott International at both the property and regional levels, Hilton Hotels Corporation as the Director of Sales & Marketing, and MGM Grand Las Vegas as the Vice President of Sales. Most recently he was at Valor Hospitality Partners for eight years as Executive Vice President and Director of Sales & Marketing. He currently resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Fla. and provides his breadth of services knowledge as a hospitality consultant for sales and marketing projects around the world.
The board began in 2017 as an effort to garner community collaboration with the newly-created Hospitality and Tourism Management major. Led by Zachary Cole, Ph.D., the major has grown exponentially since the board’s inception. The program is a study of not only hospitality and tourism, but also of business administration, sport management, foreign languages and the liberal arts. The purpose of the program is to prepare students with practical experience for fields including guest services management, attraction management, event planning and food services management.
Now in his second semester at Flagler, Freytag Professor and Director of the program David Rivera Jr., Ph.D., recognizes the foundational academic strides made by Cole and how essential the board is to continuing to build off that foundation.
“The advisory board provides the perfect industry partnership to help grow the academic side of the discipline and bridge the gap between academia and industry, especially with strong roots to our local community and economy” said Rivera.
As chair, Luciano will seek to make his impact on the board by further developing the fundraising initiatives to support the rapid growth of the major.
“By selecting the right people to direct and teach its curriculum, the program has done a super job with its growth and development in becoming a unique program in the industry,” he said.
