Flagler College’s Model UN team attended the 29th annual Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) conference Nov. 15-17. The team won Best Delegation in United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and overall Honorable Delegation.
The SRMUN conference strives to bring students together from across the country to debate topics and create solutions regarding global concerns. This year’s theme was “Our Responsibility: Facilitating Social Development through Global Engagement and Collaboration.” Participants spent the better part of three days in session, often working from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Model UN team spent weeks preparing, which included researching topics, writing positions papers and practicing speeches. This year’s team featured president Wilson Sullivan, vice president Meera Patel, secretary Chance Deboy, treasurer Gloria Nunez, and members Matthias Winsor, Nell Vanden Brook, Carter Bucken, Aurora Clements, Christine Kutka, Derek Eanes, Hannah Lilley, Megan Wright, Noah Chelednik, Mathew Lazzarini and Ryan Fritz.
“(The conference) is about learning to work together to solve difficult problems,” said Dr. Brenda Kauffman, Model UN faculty advisor. “It is intense but so fun.”
All that hard work and diligence paid off when the team won two awards, adding to more than a dozen awards the team has won over the last decade. With a strong, young team, they’ll have for the next few years the opportunity for repeat success.
