Gift provides scholarship support for students at Flagler College
Jan 28, 2021
Late last year, Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne’s godson, Eric Nelson, presented President Joseph G. Joyner with a $100k generous gift from Dr. Kinne’s estate. The gift will be added to an endowed scholarship fund, established in 2003, which bears her name.
A distinguished educator, Kinne was president of Jacksonville University from 1979-1989, Chancellor from 1989-1994 and Chancellor Emeritus until her death in 2019. She received her doctor of philosophy from University of Frankfurt, in Germany, and an honorary degree from Flagler College, for her exemplary service to the college.
The recent gift to Flagler follows a long history of her fondness for and connection with Flagler and its administration, staff, faculty and students. A resident of St. Augustine since 1958, she reported eating with her husband in the Hotel Ponce de Leon dining room, years before the college was founded.
The Frances Bartlett Kinne Endowed Scholarship is awarded to students who are entering their first-year and were members of their high school National Honor Society. Recipients must also have demonstrated exemplary character, service, and leadership while in high school. To date, eight students have benefitted from the Kinne scholarship.
Kinne was the commencement speaker for fall graduates of Flagler in 1999. She continued to be active in Flagler’s funding initiatives, in providing administrative cheerleading and in genuinely remaining connected to the students she helped through 2019 when she was 102.
Mr. Nelson, her godson and cousin shared, “Fran was a multi-talented pianist who could play by ear as well as ‘play the ink’ as the saying goes. But for all her many talents and accomplishments, perhaps the most inspiring is how she treated everyone with the utmost respect and dignity, regardless of their position. She was genuinely interested in everyone around her, and always had encouraging words to share.”
