Gargoyle wins Society of Professional Journalists regional “Mark of Excellence” nomination

Mar 22, 2019

Flagler College students earned top nominations earlier in March from the Society of Professional Journalists. Flagler College Gargoyle was once again a finalist in the Best Independent Online Student Publication category. Other finalists included Vida Magazine from the University of Alabama (winner) and SCAD Connector at Savannah College of Art and Design. This year’s lead editor is Katie Garwood.

In addition, Gargoyle student writer Jared Olson was a finalist in two categories (Online Feature Reporting and Online In-Depth Reporting) for the work he did from his Pulitzer Center grant in Mexico. Other finalists in those categories represent University of Alabama, Berry College, University of Florida, and University of South Carolina.

The top winners of each category were announced last week, and will go on to compete in the national SPJ Mark of Excellence competition.

While Flagler College students didn’t take home the top prizes, they still feel there’s a lot to take away.

“It’s incredibly exciting to see our students excel among some of the top communication and journalism programs, and I am just so proud of their accomplishments.,” said Brian Thompson, Gargoyle staff advisor and director of News and Information at Flagler College.

Congratulations to all of the students who contributed to this success.
