Flagler students share marketing ideas with popular venue Florida Theatre

Apr 18, 2017

The Jacksonville-based historic arts and music venue Florida Theatre is considering ways to improve its operations, thanks to presentations by 41 Flagler College students in Instructor Leslie Gordon’s Consumer Behavior course.

On April 5, students in the Marketing course offered creative solutions to issues the venue is currently facing, such as increasing attendance (among existing and new customers); increasing effectiveness of social media efforts; and generating revenue during the Theatre’s “dark days” (the 180 days out of the year the venue is not utilized).

“You could tell that the teams worked hard on their presentations, and brought personal experience to their analysis, which is what you’re really looking for in the business world — employees who can bring their education and skills to a task, and mix that with personal experience to create something meaningful and unique,” said Florida Theatre President Numa Saisselin. “Flagler students really distinguished themselves as students who are learning skills they can execute after graduation.”

Gordon, who has previously served on the Theatre’s Board of Directors, saw the collaboration as a “win-win” for both the students and the organization.

“It’s a win for a local non-profit theatre to gain a fresh and new marketing perspective from talented junior and senior Business students and win for students to gain real-world marketing experience/feedback,” she said.

Since the students delivered their presentations, the venue’s leadership team (including those pictured in the second photo below: Marketing Director Kathryn Wills, Social Media Coordinator Shannon Greene and Saisselin) has provided feedback on the students’ ideas, and are looking at ways of incorporating them into the organization’s marketing strategy.
