Flagler students provide service to others despite pandemic restrictions
Nov 12, 2020
This month Flagler College students participated in a day of community service for the fifth year of the college’s community service efforts called Reach Out Raise Up.
This year’s event looked a little different than years past with a smaller number than normal of organization and student participants. The Ringhaver Student Center on the college’s campus served as the event’s headquarters where participants gathered for the day’s scheduled service activities. Having a designated central location allowed for students to stay on campus to observe virus mitigation protocols, instead of the typical disbursement of groups out into the community.
“We knew it was important to keep students involved in volunteer efforts this semester despite the pandemic because while the world is in a much different place than it has been on past Days of Service, these nonprofit organizations are in the same place and still need our help,” said Flagler student and Day of Service organizer Sam Morrison.
Service activities included hosting a community donation drive, creating pet adoption baskets for Ana’s Angels Animal Rescue and assembling letters of encouragement and backpacks for students in the St. Augustine Youth Services program. Other activities also included packing toiletry bags for St. Francis House and making destress baskets for local teachers within the INK program.
In all, 113 participants put in 226 hours of service to the community.
Dean of Student Engagement & Career Development Tara Stevenson said, “It was wonderful to see service to the community still at the forefront of our students’ minds during the pandemic. It was important for them to come out as individuals or with their clubs and organizations and for a few hours, make a difference in their great community.”
Clubs and organizations represented include Student Government Association, Black Student Union, Campus Activities Board, Phi Alpha Omega, and the Women’s Softball team.
