Flagler journalism students win seven Society of Professional Journalists awards

Flagler College's online student newspaper, The Gargoyle, won six awards in the Society of Professional Journalists regional 2017 Mark of Excellence Awards, including winning for Best Independent Online Student Publication. Flagler Communication student Jessie Rowan was also a finalist in Feature Photography.

Winners and finalists received award certificates the weekend of March 24 at the SPJ Region 3 Spring Conference & Freelance Blitz at the College of Charleston.

The winning entries included:
- The Gargoyle - Best Independent Online Student Publication
- Katherine Lewin - Feature Photography (Small school division - schools with 1-9,999 students)
- Katherine Lewin - Online News Reporting

The finalists included:
- Katherine Hamilton - Online News Reporting
- Jared Talbot - Online Opinion & Commentary
- Gabby Garay - Online/Digital Feature Videography

The three winning entries will compete at the national level among other winners from SPJ’s 12 regions. Region 3 consists of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Other schools competing in the same categories included University of South Carolina, Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Florida and Berry College.

The Gargoyle has won 107 awards since 2007, and 19 of those have been opinion and commentary awards.
