City of St. Augustine employee Corey Sakryd is one of those locals who graduated from the PAD program. Sakryd oversees all grant programs for the city including from federal, state, local and special districts. He learned about the program from a shipmate when he was stationed at Naval Station Mayport.

“The program encouraged students to share and relate individual roles and responsibilities, further enhancing and developing course concepts,” he said.

He said he’s already put some of his class instruction to use when he applied for, presented about and ultimately secured a $200,000 grant from Florida Inland Navigation District. The grant monies will be used to dredge Salt Run in spring 2019.

He attributes the program’s set up of cohort learning as one that works. In addition, the faculty teach alongside having full-time jobs in the sector in which they teach.

“Who else would be better qualified to teach…emergency management than the Palm Coast fire chief (and in between two hurricanes no less)” he quipped.

The commencement speaker was Dr. Jenny Zorn, ‘80, provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University Bakersfield. She is a respected authority on gender diversity issues and veterans initiatives through the programs she’s helped create on the CSU campus.

The Public Administration Program at Flagler College is designed specifically to meet the educational and career objectives of public sector professionals and includes courses such as management, program evaluation, public budgeting, human resources, administrative ethics, public policy and grant writing.
