Flagler College appointed Dr. Kurt Sebastian, professor of mathematics, to the position of the Dean of the School of Business, Education and Mathematics. His appointment follows the two-year tenure of Associate Professor Allison Roberts, Ph.D.
Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty Alan Woolfolk said in the announcement: “I would like to thank Allison for two years of remarkable leadership and hard work as Dean of the School of Business, Education, and Mathematics. Allison has set high standards for all of us, myself included, and her voice will be missed.”
Sebastian joins two other Deans: Andrea McCook, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts and Dean of the School of Creative Arts and Letters and Melissa Southwell, Associate Professor of Natural Sciences and Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences.
Sebastian was selected by a search committee comprised of the Dean of Academic Life, the other two school deans, two department chairs from business and education, a representative from the Math and Technology Department and Dean Woolfolk.
He earned his Ph.D. and Sc.M. from Brown University in Applied Mathematics, concentration in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. Sebastian assumed his responsibilities as Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Technology in August, 2015. Prior to that, he was a Professor of Mathematics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he taught for 21 years. He’s had two tours of duty at sea early in his Coast Guard career, one as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Point Arena. He retired as a Captain just prior to coming to Flagler College. Dr. Sebastian has experience in basic research, authoring peer-reviewed papers in Computational Fluid Mechanics and serving as a Fellow at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics at U.C.L.A. working on "Grand Challenge Problems in Computational Astrophysics." He also has experience in applied research involving undergraduate students, directing numerous capstone research projects for senior level students at the Coast Guard Academy providing consulting work in Operations Research for various units throughout the U.S. Coast Guard.
Sebastian has been married to Anne O'Neill for over 30 years. They have one son, Nicholas, who with his wife Morgan, has this summer given the new Dean his first grandchild.
Sebastian was able to enter into a short period of transition with his predecessor’s help prior to the start of the academic year.Tagged As
