Flagler College Alumni House opened with dedication ceremony
May 4, 2018
The Flagler College Alumni House opened with a dedication ceremony on Friday, attended by alumni and supporters of the college. The new building will serve as a gathering space for the college’s more than 18,000 alumni and is intended to promote the important relationship between alumni and alma mater.
The Alumni House will serve as the center of alumni activities and has partnered with the Career Development Center. The purpose of joining the two offices in one space is to recognize the importance of the successful transition from student to professional.
On the cusp of the college’s 50th anniversary, all those who spoke alluded to the next 50 years and the dependence upon the alumni body, who now have a place on campus to call “home”.
President Dr. Joseph Joyner opened the program by welcoming all who “gave generously to make this happen” and thanked each organization involved with the project including the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation essentially secured the future of the building by providing a $500,000 1:1 matching grant, applied for by Dr. Leslee Keys, Director of Historic Preservation at the college. The matching funds were then acquired through a spirited fundraising campaign which secured over $530,000 from 77 alumni and $32,000 from parents of alumni and friends of the college.
Before inviting all in attendance to come inside for a tour, past president of the Alumni Board and current Trustee, Mitch Walk, said, “we’ve dedicated many buildings…I can’t wait for everyone to see the inside [of this one].”
Director of Alumni Relations Margo Thomas ’06, reminisced on the eight year conversation surrounding the idea of an alumni space and the excitement felt when the green light was finally given to start the fundraising. To the overall group, the amount needed seemed unobtainable, but Thomas was determined to make the long-talked-about-dream a reality. She says, “That’s what happened. Alumni gave with their heart and did so generously.”Tagged As
