Chris Metzger

What is your major? Do you have any minors?

I am a Criminology and Sociology major with minors in Environmental Science and Law.

What are you passionate about? What inspires you?

I am passionate about being part of a team and working to make it the best it can possibly be. We had our best year during Covid, and I feel that part of the reason was because we could only count on each other for support. We were spending every day with each other and that allowed us to build a level of togetherness that the team had not known before then. Coach Warner would always say, “The strength of our team is our team”. No matter what was happening we knew that we had people willing to fight for us.

What is one lesson that you learned at Flagler that you will never forget?

Everything happens for a reason. I had never heard of Flagler before being recruited by them. I had never even been to Saint Augustine before my visit. Throughout my career there were difficulties and injuries which I had to overcome but it was preparing me for the future. Now I am planning on living in Saint Augustine with my soon to be wife and could not have found a better place to call home.

If you could share a piece of advice for a new student, what would it be?

Talk to your professors and show them that you care about their class. Introduce yourself and build a relationship with the professors since they truly want to see you succeed. If you respect their time, then they will also respect yours.

Our core values are Transformative Learning, Citizenship with Integrity, Thoughtful Stewardship, and Respectful and Inclusion Community. How have you contributed to these Core Values during your time at Flagler?

I feel that given my time at Flagler and taking multiple different majors and minors I was able to see more of the school than most. I believe that my contribution stemmed from Stewardship and Integrity. I was given the role of being one of the captains of the basketball team and it carries a significant amount of weight. This allowed me to lead by example and showcase the opportunities that Flagler has given me. This school brings out the best in people and with that comes a want to give back so others can have the same opportunities.

What are your plans after you graduate?

I will be staying local and working for SouthState Bank. I was introduced to my mentor who works for the bank through basketball, and it has changed my life.
