Design Week 2023, Exploring Diversity in Design

March 20-24, 2023

AIGA Flagler Design Week is a week-long series of programs exploring design's process, craft, and practice. Our mission is to increase appreciation and awareness about design, showcase industry professionals' talents, highlight our alumni's accomplishments, and provide a further understanding of the business side of design. Students can participate in a variety of workshops and discussions. The week closes with a juried exhibition of student work and a day filled with design agency tours.

Day 1: Monday, March 20th

Project Management

Lisa Van Zowll, Director of the Learning Resource Center at Flagler College

The LRC is a tutoring center by Flagler students, for Flagler students. Highly-trained peer tutors are available for appointment-based, one-on-one, and small-group tutoring and are supervised by Lab Coordinators who are experts in their diverse fields. The LRC exists to support students in their coursework, providing dedicated academic assistance and a convenient place to study.

Sustainability in Packaging Design: a Holistic Approach

Chasing Your Dreams

Elise Crigar, Director of Social Media Strategy at Octagon

Elise Crigar is a skateboarder, photographer, and lover of sports and creative content. Her passion for athletes, storytelling, live events, and her skills in digital marketing, social media strategy, content production, photography, and graphic design, led her to work with the world's best athletes, inspirational icons, and product developers. After attending Flagler College and earning a BA in Graphic Design, she designed the first comprehensive hardback book on female skateboarding, “It’s Not About Pretty.” Her childhood dreams led her to relocate to Southern California, where she works as Octagon's Director of Social Media Strategy. Octagon is a leading global agency in sports, entertainment, and culture. A group of creative thinkers and energetic doers harnessing that playmaker spirit to generate fame that endures.

Vincent Lendering, Graphic Designer at Flagler College and Freelance Creative

Vincent Lendering is a designer that values creating fresh ideas and bringing them to life. Coming from a small island in the Dutch Caribbean, he learned to think of innovative ways to reach end goals, as resources were only sometimes available. He thinks outside the box and develops designs that speak to the audience. His experience comes from designing for Flagler College, NAPA, and various freelance clients.

Collaging and Moodboarding with Flagler AIGA

Ben Tran, AIGA Flagler President

Learn how collage can be used to create mood boards. Mood boards explore ideas, including color, textures, typography, imagery, layouts, and more! This workshop teaches students the importance of exploring, researching, and planning when starting the design process.

How I Accidentally Became a UX Designer

Shannon Werling, Web and UX Designer at Swerl

Shannon Werling is a freelance designer with eight years of experience in the field. She was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where she discovered her passion for art at a young age. Shannon attended Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, where she earned a degree in Graphic Design in 2015.

After graduating, Shannon began her career as a graphic designer at a local design agency. She quickly realized her love for user experience design and shifted her focus to this field. In 2020, Shannon decided to become a freelance web & UX designer, allowing her the flexibility to work on various projects and collaborate with different clients. She believes great design should be beautiful and functional, creating a seamless experience that users will love. Outside of work, Shannon enjoys spending time with her family and friends and visiting St. Augustine whenever possible.

AIGA Flagler, Alumni Relations, and the Career Development Center host a career fair. This is an excellent opportunity for Graphic Design students to meet potential employers and learn about the Graphic Design World.

Graphic Designer Ellie Dawson is passionate about conveying a brand at all project stages, from logo development to signage in a finished building. Dalton Agency Studio Tour

The Dalton Agency is a full-service agency that has grown to include over 100 employees across Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Nashville offices.
