Testing at Flagler College

Flagler College is committed to keeping our students, employees, campus and community safe during these challenging times. 

From the re-entry testing to antigen testing on campus, we are better prepared to manage the COVID virus. 

Antigen testing is performed on campus by our Health Service team on symptomatic students. If the test is negative, we recommend they receive a PCR test.

Athletes are tested on a regular basis in accordance with both the NCAA and Peach Belt Conference. 

Students who are contacts of a positive COVID case are requested to get tested on day 6 of their exposure and are able to end their quarantine on day 7 if a negative PCR test result is obtained.  

The testing efforts, along with the policies/protocols we have put into place, have enabled us to provide a safe and healthy campus for our students and employees.

Why a PCR Test?

The PCR test is consider the "gold standard" in COVID detection The test actually detects RNA, the genetic material, that is specific to the COVID virus. The test can detect the virus within days of infection, even in those who have no symptoms.

Why an antigen test?

An antigen test is used to quickly diagnose an active COVID infection. Results are faster than a PCR test but antigen tests have a higher chance of missing an active infection.  If an antigen test shows a negative test result, and the person is experiencing symptoms or other factors are involved, a PCR test will be required to confirm the result.

When is each test used?

At Flagler College we will test students who are are experiencing COVID symptoms.  If the antigen test result is negative, we will ask the student to get a PCR test.  The student is required to then quarantine until the PCR test results are received.  If negative, the student is no longer required to quarantine. If positive, the student is required to isolate for 10 days following the test or onset of symptoms.

If I come in contact with a COVID positive person, which test do you recommend?

If you are a contact of a COVID positive person we recommend a PCR test on day 6 after exposure. This test is more accurate in detecting the virus.

Why is the College asking students to be tested?

The purpose of requiring students to provide proof of a negative PCR test before returning to campus is to mitigate an outbreak at the beginning of the semester. An outbreak would negatively impact the opportunity to participate in in-person classes.

Why do I need to get tested?

The purpose of requiring students to provide proof of a negative PCR test before returning to campus is to mitigate an outbreak at the beginning of the semester. An outbreak would negatively impact the opportunity to participate in in-person classes. Additionally, it is also considered a best practice by the CDC and other health officials as well as surveillance testing, required masking, social distancing, and limiting gatherings as a way to reduce the spread of COVID infection in a community.

How do I get tested?

Individuals can locate testing facilities in their area, many being offered at no cost, utilizing this website, https://www.hhs.gov/coronavirus/community-based-testing-sites/index.html. Some locations require appointments while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

When do I need to get tested?

Students should plan on getting tested after January 1, provided they plan to return to campus on January 8 or thereafter. Individuals should be aware of how long it is taking labs to process samples and results notifications. Students returning prior to January 8 should undergo a test according to the suggested time frame provided in their email.

What happens if I test positive?

Individuals who test positive will be required to isolate for ten days before returning to campus. A return to campus form must be completed prior to returning to campus.

If I test positive, does this impact my ability to attend classes?

Students who miss the start of the semester because of a positive test result will not be dropped from any of their classes. Faculty will not penalize students in any way who miss class because they are complying with our Covid protocols.   

Academic Affairs will send a notice to student's faculty letting them know that student will need to miss class. Faculty will expect communication from the student, so they can work directly with the student to insure class requirements are met and the student remains on track.

What if I don't want to get tested?

Students who do not wish to undergo a PCR test need to submit an exemption request prior to January 1. Students who receive an exemption must quarantine for two weeks prior to accessing campus facilities. The exemption form can be completed at COVID-19 Exemption Request .

What if I am not granted and exemption to testing?

Students who disagree with the decision related to their exemption request, and believe the decision was based on an error in the process or have new information that was not originally provided, may file an appeal by sending an email to Dr. Sandra Miles, Vice President of Student Affairs, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at SMiles@flagler.edu, within 48 hours of receiving the initial decision. Include supporting information and documentation to substantiate your appeal.

What if I'm an online-only student? Do I still have to get tested?

If a student does not plan to utilize campus facilities, they do not need to provide proof of a negative test result.

What if I don't live on campus? Do I still need to get tested?

Students who live off-campus but still plan to access campus facilities (i.e. classrooms, library, offices) must provide proof of a negative PCR test result.

How do I upload my test results to Flagler Plus app?

The app status will be set to "Testing" which will allow the user to select the test result - Positive or Negative.  Once the result is selected, the app will prompt the user to upload an electronic version of the test result, typically a screenshot. This must be the official result containing the location of the test, date of the test, the type of test and the test result.

What if I already tested positive for COVID? Do I still need to get tested?

If an individual tested positive for COVID on or after November 1st, they do not need to undergo a PCR test at this time. As an alternative, they should upload their positive test result to the app.

How are test results tracked?

Test results are being recorded in a HIPAA compliant site and being reviewed by the Healthy Saints team for test date, result and testing format.

Where can I obtain free testing?

CVS and Walgreens offer testing at no fee in many parts of the country if an individual believes they may have been exposed due to:

  • Being in a large public gathering
  • Experiencing symptoms
  • Residing in a group setting where the risk of transmission is high. Please note: CVS has confirmed that college students are included in the "high risk of transmission" category, so students may select that as an option.

St. Johns County

The St. Johns County free COVID testing site has closed, but Jacksonville's Regency Square Mall site is still conducting free tests.

I cannot find free testing in my community and have to pay to get tested; why is the College not paying for the test?

Free tests are available in most communities or within driving distance. Instead of providing COVID tests on campus and then adding fees to semester invoices, as most institutions have done, the College has opted to allow students to obtain free testing in their community or the surrounding community. If you are having a difficult time finding free options, please email us at healthysaints@flagler.edu and our COVID coordinator will work with you on a solution.

I received notification from the Saints Health + app that my test results are due on January 5th and my test results are not in, what should I do?

We are aware that the Saints Health Plus app is incorrectly listing the due date as of January 5 for students to upload their test results. This is an error. Students have until the day they return to campus to upload their results. The app developers are working on resolving this. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this has caused.

What happens if I cannot receive my test results before I return to campus?

Students who have undergone a test but have not received their test results by the start of the semester are not permitted to return to campus but will not be penalized for missing class. Students who find themselves in this situation should inform their faculty of their situation.

What will happen if a large portion of students tests positive? Will the semester be shifted to an online model?

The COVID Task Force and the President’s Cabinet meet weekly and will assess the College's key metrics to determine our next steps. At this time, the College will begin classes as planned on January 11th in St. Augustine and January 4th in Tallahassee, at a level 3. Should this change, the campus will be notified by the COVID Task Force immediately with additional information.

Students who receive a positive test result will be required to isolate for ten days before returning to campus and record their test results in the Saints Health+ app. A return to campus form must be completed before returning to campus after testing positive. This can be completed over the phone by calling Health Services at 904-819-6211.

COVID Testing Exemption Process

  • Students must submit an exemption request prior to January 1, utilizing the Qualtrics form.
  • Requests will be reviewed by Kris Roberts and Laura Stevenson Dumas and students will be notified of a decision prior to January 1.
  • Exemption request related to a medical issue will be reviewed by the supervising physician.
  • Students whose exemption request is approved are required to quarantine for two weeks prior to accessing campus.
    • Residential students will be permitted to quarantine on campus.
  • Students who disagree with the decision related to their exemption request, and believe the decision was based on an error in the process or have new information that was not originally provided, may appeal to Dr. Sandra Miles at SMiles@flagler.edu within 48 hours of receiving the initial decision.
