    Andrew Young donates recordings to Flagler to begin civil rights archive

    Civil rights activist Andrew Young donated interviews from his documentary “Crossing in St. Augustine” to Flagler College in what will begin a new archive chronicling the historic civil rights movement in the Nation’s Oldest City.

    Flagler student receives full scholarship to Harvard

    It’s off to Harvard for Flagler student Katherine Wrisley, who received a full scholarship to Harvard Divinity School, along with a Presidential Scholarship that will cover $10,000 of her living expenses.

    Journalism club takes 1st Amendment rights away from students

    Flagler College’s Society of Professional Journalists chapter President Caroline Young wants the club’s presence to grow on and off campus. Young took the Flagler SPJ chapter’s reins in May. She has pushed student members to organize exciting events, including a no-holds-barred “First Amendment Free Food Festival” on Oct. 21.

    Flagler College students and recent grads landed a number of awards and scholarships during the spring semester • Spring 2009 graduate Jamie Alvarez received a leadership award from the Enterprising Women’s Leadership Institute of Florida, an organization that identifies, trains and supports women as business community leaders.

    A grant writing class helped them bring almost $1 million to St. Johns County Flagler College public administration students recently brought nearly $1 million in funding to St. Augustine public safety initiatives – just by doing their homework.

    Adventures in the Andes

    Spanish students learn through service in Peru The trip is over and the bags are unpacked, but nine Flagler College students just can’t stop talking about Peru. This past summer, Assistant Professor of Spanish Aggie Johnson and her students travelled to Cusco, Peru – the former center of the Inca civilization – to learn, volunteer and see the sights. The group stayed with local families and attended classes at a center known for its research on the highland people.

    Flagler launches ‘Ignite’ freshmen learning communities

    Flagler is making some big changes to its freshmen experience. This fall, the college held its first classes for a new initiative to enhance student engagement. The program, called “Ignite,” creates first-year learning communities by placing students in the same classes and giving them a variety of unique experiences together.

    While her peers completed internships in crisp, well-lit offices, Capt. Jessica Parker, Ph.D., wore battle fatigues and slept in a tent during a 106-degree Texas summer. She ate dehydrated food and went without showers for a month. She held her own during convoy operations, firing her weapon and dodging snipers.
