The Ponce courtyard gets historic makeover
Oct 1, 2015
For visitors of the Hotel Ponce de Leon during Henry Flagler’s heyday, the courtyard was a summer oasis of exotic flora — of date palms, African irises and birds of paradise. Over time, the courtyard evolved from having a wild to a more manicured aesthetic, but landscaping improvements this summer have brought back the past.
The improvements, designed by landscape architect Sharon Fowler, added texture, color and height variation akin to the 19th century courtyard. It’s all part of a multi-million dollar restoration and renovation project on the Ponce this year to mark the 450th anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine.
