A grand re-opening for the Ponce
Apr 4, 2013
With a wave of his top hat, Henry Flagler (well, a re-enactor who looked quite a bit like him) welcomed more than 4,000 visitors to tour the Hotel Ponce de Leon during an opening day event on Jan. 18.
The day commemorated 125 years since the former hotel — today a National Historic Landmark and the centerpiece of Flagler College — opened its doors and became one of the grandest hotel resorts of its day. Re-enactors strolled through the grounds, an orchestra played patriotic music on the Loggias and Henry Flagler arrived in a horse-drawn carriage with Flagler President William T. Abare Jr., Trustee David Drysdale and St. Augustine Mayor Joe Boles.
This was the first of a series of anniversary events planned throughout 2013 as the college celebrates the legacy of Henry Flagler.
