    Alumni Weekend 2011

    From awards and cocktails to surfing and athletics, Alumni Weekend had something for everybody. Athletic Hall of Fame inducts two … and a team  Flagler College held its eighth annual Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Alumni Weekend this past April where two individuals, along with an entire national championship men’s tennis team, were inducted.

    Parks returns to Flagler as dean of Flagler College-Tallahassee

    Flagler College chose a familiar face to take over as dean of the college’s Tallahassee campus. Dr. Donald K. Parks has been named dean for the program on the campus of Tallahassee Community College. He served as assistant dean of Academic Affairs at the main St. Augustine campus from 2005 to 2007 before moving on to director of Student Success at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. Parks succeeds Dr. John Bruno, who accepted a position as Dean of Academic Affairs at Fontbonne University in St. Louis.

    SIFE finishes third in national competition

    The Flagler College Students In Free Enterprise team [SIFE] advanced to the final four and finished as second runner-up at the 2011 SIFE USA National Exposition in May.

    One hundred eighty-seven miles over two days … in running shoes? That’s what the Flagler men’s and women’s cross country teams did in March from Savannah, Ga.,to St. Augustine.

    Armstrong, Horner and Eide say goodbye to Flagler

    One is an accomplished investigative journalist, the other a quirky author who took on bullies, and the last an eccentric education teacher. They may not be alike in their accomplishments, personalities, or histories, but the one thing that ties them together is how they will miss being a part of the Flagler community. This year saw the retirement of all three: Rob Armstrong, Carl Horner and Kathleen Eide.

    Nelson named new director of Career Services Office

    Kristin Nelson has been named the new director of Career Services. Nelson previously served as director of student activities at the college before accepting the new role. She will spearhead a reorganization of career services as the department moves from the Office of Academic Affairs to Student Services.

    Flagler College adds four new Trustees; Two long-serving members retire

    Flagler College has added four new members to its Board of Trustees, including two alumni and a former U.S. ambassador. Long-serving members Judge Howell Melton and W.W. Gay also resigned from the board and were named Trustees Emeriti. Melton served on the board since 1971, and was chairman from 1998 to 2000. He is a former St. Johns County Circuit Court Judge and a U.S. District Court Judge. Gay has been a member of the board since 1999, and he is the founder and chief executive officer of W.W. Gay Mechanical Contractor in Jacksonville.

    Auditorium renovation campaign kicks off

    From world-renowned performers and college theatrical performances to educational lectures and top political commentators, the Flagler College Auditorium has been a hot-seat of cultural activity since its opening in 1991. Now, the college is embarking on a fundraising effort called “Setting the Stage: The Campaign for the Flagler College Auditorium” for a major renovation and expansion of the auditorium. Setting the Stage aims to raise funds for a two-phase project. This is the first major renovation of the auditorium, which has seen 20 years of continuous use by the college and the St. Augustine community.

    In Memory of former professor Robin King

    Dr. J. Robin King, former professor of philosophy at Flagler College, passed away Dec. 9, 2010, after a 17-year battle with brain cancer. He was 63.

    Flagler Field takes big step forward with new locker room facility

    Visitors to Flagler Field will be treated to a radical change this spring. Where there was once a dirt lot for cars and the barest facilities, fans and athletes attending baseball, soccer and softball matches will now find paved parking and the new Flagler Field Locker Room Facility.
