Lync Instant Messaging

All employees have access to Instant Messaging with other Flagler College employees using Microsoft Lync. Lync allows you to communicate with other employees by typing messages in real-time, which can be a convenient alternative to emailing or making a phone call. Depending on how you access Lync, you can also send files to other employees, hold a group chat, or even share your screen!

How to access Lync:

Windows Application Screenshot

  1. Lync may open automatically when you log into your computer. If it doesn't, follow these instructions.
  2. Click "Start."
  3. For Windows 7 users, you can type Lync in the search bar to find the program. Click on Microsoft Lync 2010 to open Lync. Screenshot
  4. For Windows XP users, you should find Lync in Start > Programs > Microsoft Lync. Click on Microsoft Lync 2010 to open Lync. Screenshot
  5. If you cannot find a Lync shortcut, it may not be installed on your computer. Please contact us to let us know that you need Lync installed.

Mac Application Screenshot

  1. You may already see a blue "L" icon in your Dock. If not, follow these instructions. Screenshot
  2. Open the Applications folder from your Dock or from your Macintosh HD. Screenshot
  3. Click or double-click Microsoft Lync.app to open Lync.
  4. If you cannot find a Lync shortcut, it may not be installed on your computer. Please contact us to let us know that you need Lync installed.

From the Web

Just log into your email account online by entering https://exchange.flagler.edu in your web browser. Your contacts will automatically appear on the left side of your email screen.

From Your Mobile Device

Search your device's app market for "Lync" and make sure to download the app made by Microsoft, or find your mobile app from Microsoft's website.

How to log into Lync:

  1. Ensure that you have a network connection.
  2. When you log in, enter your full Flagler College email address (including @flagler.edu) as the username.
  3. Enter your email/network password as the password.
  4. If you cannot log in, verify your login credentials, verify that you are connected to the network, and if necessary, restart your device. For further assistance, contact us.

How to manage Contacts:

  1. To make it easy to find employees you contact, you can organize your contacts into Groups.
  2. Right-click in the contact list area to rename, delete, or create a new contact Group.

How to add Contacts:

  1. In the search bar, enter part of the name of the employee you would like to add to your contact list.
  2. A list of search results will appear.
  3. Click the user your would like to add to your contact list and click the (+) plus icon next to his or her name and choose a Group to which you would like to add this contact.

We find that configuring your Lync contact list with the following options makes it easiest to communicate with your contacts:

Windows Application

  • SELECT "Name View"
  • Do not select  "Picture View"
  • SELECT "Show Status Text"
  • SELECT "Show Friendly Name"
  • Do not select "Sort by Display Name"
  • SELECT "Sort by Availability"
  • Choose whether you want to "Show Frequent Contacts"

Mac Application

  • Do not select "View by Name"
  • SELECT "View by Group"
  • SELECT "Use Compact View"
  • SELECT "Show Status Text"
  • SELECT "Show Friendly Names"
  • Do not select "Show Offline Contacts"
  • Do not select "Collapse all Groups"
