A Crowning Achievement
The Campaign to Restore the Solarium of Ponce de Leon HallThis is your opportunity to be a part of Henry Flagler's legacy.
Setting the Stage
Flagler College Auditorium is the premier indoor events venue in St. Augustine.
For more than 20 years, the Auditorium has been the setting for forums, presentations, lectures, performances, and a variety of programs that have attracted audiences of all ages and interests.
Speakers have included authors such as Pat Conroy and Dennis Lehane; public figures such as Ambassador Andrew Young, Pat Buchanan, and U.S. Senator George McGovern; journalists such as David Broder, William Raspberry, Robert Novak and Joe Klein; historians, such as Dr. Michael Gannon and Dr. William Kelso; and Biblical scholars Bishop N.T. Wright and John Dominic Crossan.
The Auditorium is also used for community cultural programs, including the EMMA Concert series, the St. Augustine Community Ballet, the Nutcracker Ballet, the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival, Flagler College Theatre Arts productions and community concerts. Most of these programs are offered to the community at no charge or at a nominal price for admission.
Serving the Community
Within the next few years, the city of St. Augustine will celebrate momentous anniversaries that will bring widespread attention to the community. These celebrations will also increase the demands placed on the Flagler College Auditorium.
2013: the 500th Anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s landing on the east coast of present-day Florida and the 125th Anniversary of the opening of the Hotel Ponce de Leon;
2015: the 450th Anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine; and
2018: the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Flagler College.
Since the Auditorium’s completion in 1991, no major renovations or improvements have been made to this important facility. As preparations are made to commemorate these anniversaries, Flagler College will be called upon to provide facilities that will house ceremonies, performances, public education programs, and exhibitions. In order to accommodate these special events, the Auditorium must be renovated and updated to meet this challenge and to capitalize on these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
The renovation will be divided into two phases:
PHASE I: THEATER RENOVATION
Timeline: Summer 2012
Estimated Cost: $1,000,000
This phase includes upgrading technical components to current industry standards, including the sound and lighting systems; replacing seating, carpet, lobby curtains, room-divider curtain, wallpaper, and sconces; renovating the restrooms and the green room; and updating the chandeliers and lobby benches.
PHASE II: NEW ADDITION
Timeline: When Fundraising is Completed
Estimated Cost: $1,200,000
Preliminary architectural renderings for the addition include classrooms, meeting rooms, and offices for faculty and staff.
Making an Investment
As we begin preparing the Auditorium for St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary and related events, we ask you and other members of our community to support The Campaign for the Flagler College Auditorium by making an investment in the facility that you and others have enjoyed for the past 20 years. The much needed renovations will ensure that the facility is ready to host the celebrations that will be held in our community. With your support, we will be able to sustain the quality of the Auditorium and its programs for the future.
