Kelsie Ruff, '10, Liberal Arts Major

Senior liberal arts major Kelsie Ruff describes herself as a die-hard Florida Gators fan who chose Flagler College over the University of Florida so she could be “more than just a number in the classroom.”

“I was an undecided liberal arts major who had just graduated from community college, and until I came to Flagler, I didn’t realize how unprepared I was for the real world,“ she said. ”Without the academic skills, advice from my advisor and professors, and the general scholarly work I’ve done here at Flagler, I wouldn’t have had a clear career path.”

Kelsie is now on the Dean’s List, but she says there are much better measures of her success: “I’ve actually had professors compliment me on how much my scholarship has improved since I came to Flagler,” Kelsie said.

The personal attention she receives from her professors helped her find a passion for history and taught her how to make it into a career. After graduation, Kelsie wants to pursue her doctorate in history and ultimately share her passion with others as a professor. She says her success is directly tied to the guidance and support she receives at Flagler.

“I’m really thankful that more than 80 percent of our student body receives some sort of financial aid, because I know I’m not the only one who needed help to get here,” she said. “I’m paying for my own education. My family is unable to contribute to my tuition or living expenses, so without the help from the Flagler Scholarship Fund, there is no way I would be able to be at Flagler.”
