Flagler alum Dan Eyman, ’01, traded life on the east coast for one on the west, merging skills in design and technology for a job as product designer with popular comedy video site “Funny or Die.”
“It’s really all about delivering cat gifs to millions of devices as quick and easy as possible,” Eyman joked.
Funny or Die is a California-based Emmy-award winning video site — the funniest videos of which are voted on by viewers. The website combines user-generated content with original, exclusive content, from an array of users. Anyone from celebrities to the average person can upload and share videos.
From northern Florida to New York City, Eyman tried small agencies and graduate school before heading west to Los Angeles. He freelanced for Sephora and Apple before landing his position at Funny or Die.
“I have to give both companies I freelanced for credit for making me a better designer,” Eyman said.
Millions of people access the webpage weekly. As part of his job, Eyman works with the product engineering team on user experience, planning and design of new or broken features on the website and apps. His other duties include supporting the marketing and production teams with logos, graphics, and branding questions.
Funny or Die, he said, is more than a job: “It’s kind of cliché, but it is a family.”
The comedy website is primarily web-based, but does sponsor comedy festivals, and in an effort to be even greater, has just created a Weather App.
Eyman graduated from Flagler College with a major in Graphic Design. He refers to his college experience with two specific people in mind, Randy Taylor and Don Martin.
“These professors wouldn’t accept anything but perfect execution on every project,” he said.
The Flagler grad shared his biggest surprise working for Funny or Die, saying, “We throw a great party.” As it turns out, that shouldn’t be a surprise, considering comedian Will Ferrell is one of the three founders of the site.
