Ty Williams was an admitted "typical college student." He spent his free time at Flagler College surfing, painting and eating ramen noodles. So when Men’s Journal and N’East Magazine asked to feature him in their pages, he was understandably surprised.
"I never thought that if I was going to be in a magazine it would be [Men’s Journal]," he said.
The first publication began last summer, when Williams returned home to Maine. He worked for two friends who own a successful business making cedar surfboards. Men’s Journal came in and asked Williams if they could use him for a spread on men who do things with their hands.
Then N’East Magazine, an outdoor adventure magazine more suited to Williams’ interests, came calling. Their article features Williams’ passion in life: painting.
"My artwork is colorful and bright," he said. "It literally is a regurgitation of what comes out of my head, whether I’m at home or away."
N’East also offered Williams an internship as an artist, and he started creating sketches for the magazine last fall.
Now that he's graduated, Williams would like to travel, paint and get inspiration from the real world, wherever that may be.
"For me, the best stuff for my work happens when I’m not around people I know and the places I [usually] am," he said. “When I see stuff that is offbeat, that’s what inspires me – especially when I see it in other cultures."
