~ Alumni Awards Established in 1999 ~

Flagler College honored alumni, who have distinguished themselves professionally, benefited the community or achieved major accomplishments since completing their degree at Flagler College, at the 2008 Alumni Awards Luncheon during May’s Alumni Weekend.

The Pride of Flagler Alumni Award is presented to alumni who have been Flagler College graduates for a minimum of 10 years, and have achieved regional and/or national recognition in his/her field.  In addition, these individuals must have rendered service to Flagler College or service to his/her local community.  This is the highest award presented by the College.  This award was presented to Lisa E. Wallenda Picard on May 2nd, 2008.  Picard graduated with her bachelor of arts degree in 1992, and earned her master of arts from George Washington University.  A member of the National Association of Government Communicators, Picard has served on various political campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels.  Lisa currently works for the USDA, serving as the Agency Chief of Staff and working with members of both Houses of Congress.

The Flagler College Service Award is presented to someone who has served the College for more than 10 years, made significant contributions, and has maintained a relationship with the College.  This year, Mimi Cox Roberson was the recipient of this award.  Roberson graduated from Flagler College in 1977 with a bachelors degree.  She returned to serve as a college recorder for the College in 1997.  Within 6 years, she became the Registrar and has since implemented many positive changes to benefit the College community.  She has gone above and beyond her duties as Registrar, volunteering as the sponsor for the FC Service Club, assisting in graduation ceremonies, and serving as an officer and active member of the Florida Association of Registrars and Admissions Officers.

The Professional Achievement Award, for alumni who have demonstrated significant accomplishments in their field, was presented to Michael Strawser this year.  A 1986 graduate from Flagler College, Strawser earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from FSU in 1993.  Dr. Strawser is currently an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UCF, where he has taught for six years.  He is also author of the book Both/And: Reading Kierkegaard from Irony to Edification, as well as many academic articles and book reviews.
