Professional Profile:

Professor Welch earned his Ph.D. and his M.A. in Sociology from The University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. He earned his B.A. in Criminology & Law with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Florida. His research interests include criminal courts, environmental issues, homelessness, media dna the scholarship of teaching and learning. He is the author and co-author of numerous articles and conference papers, as well as a textbook on the U.S. criminal courts. He has taught  introductory-level courses in sociology and criminology and many upper-division courses, such as Sociology of Law, Women in the Legal System, Correctional Systems and Process, Criminal Courts in the U.S., Environmental Sociology, Gender and Sexualtiy, Media and Society, Advanced Research Methods, and Grad Attack, a course designed to prepare students for graduate school. He helped start and currently sponsors several student clubs, including the Human Rights Advocate Club and the Social Sciences Club. Schools where he previously taught include the University of North Florida, Washington State University, Portland State University, Portland Community College, and Clark College. He is also active in community projects and provides pro bono consulting to area attorneys. Awards include Disability Appreciation Award (UNF), Outstanding Service Award (UNF), Kahler Grant (Flagler College), and Outstanding Service Award (St. Augustine Foot Soldiers Remembrance Project).
